Issued htfore Bunyan's (Wtli. This
the eleventh edition of Part I.
Includes the author' own revision ;
witlrti kd to many quaint variations
in language. It is curious to note
how Bunyan added to hi story
year by year. Worldly Wiseman
made his debut in the second edi-
tion ; Mr. By-ends in the third
which appeared in 1679. A first
edition of "Pilgrim'! Propms" is
worth $f75o. There were some
early American editions referred to
by Bunyan in his rhymed prefaces
that are worth looking for.
Prteenghter and Packer.
Jim Corbett administered a very
neat rebuke recently to a wealthy
San Francisco ork packer whose
gut fie chanced to he. The pork
packer was giving1 a large stag- din-
ner and invi'd Corbett whom he
htd met tverd times to be one of
the gues. Jim know ing tshe' man'i
reputation pueswd that he was in-
vited partially in the hope that he
would entertain the diners with a
monologue. He reo!vd to attend
the feast and also resolved there
should be no tnonolijue. Sure
enough as the cigars were brought
on tihe pork picker turned to Cor-
bet! and said :
"I hear you sre a famous mono-
logi'sh. Can't we have one of your
charming' little monologues."
"Certainly" replied Curbed
gravely "and 1 hear you are a fa
nous pork dealer. Can't we a an
encore have One of your charming
title pork barrels?"
The Speaker of the Commons.
Mr. Gully speaker of the lir'.t-
fsh house of c--'n:uns and tbui
known as the "iir;t commoner of
the land" is an ol 'er man than
many persons suppose. He will
te 70 years old next year. He was
a ttranger to the majority of the
members of the house when he was
first elected to the chair of the
house of commons eight years ao.
lie had then for nine years been
the liberal representative of Car-
lisle but' he was rarely seen in the
legislative chamber. He fpent his
evenings in the top room of the
library." Mr. Cully sat n-ht after
sight immersed in briefs from the
study of which !.e was distracted
from time to time by i:nperi?us
summons of the div'i'n bells. It
was his old Sfal friend and col-
league the late L llcrihe'l who
auegesied his name as '.he tnot
suitable successor to the rrtiring
speaker Peel. It a a very cl.-se
and exciting division but Mr. Cul-
ly won by the narrow margin of a
dozen votes.

Eve's Fruit.
' A fruit supposed to -bear tra
mark of Five's teeth is one oMh
many botanical curiottitics of Cey-
lon. The tree on which it grows
is 'known hv the significant name
of "the forbidden fruit" or "Eve's
very pksnnt scent but the really
remarkal.de feature of the tree the
one to which it ows its name is
the fruit. It is beautiful and hangs
from the tree in a peculiar maimer.
Orance on the outside and deep
crimson within each fruit lias the
appearance of having had a piece
bitten out of it. Tips fact toiher
