The latest effect of republican
protection is the formation of n
seven million d liar trust among
the stogie and cheap cigar facto-
ries. There should be some piu-
laid for the protection of tin-
smokers of some of the stuff us d
hereabouts for the righteous will
some day rise up in a smiting
mood.
The Purcell Register says the
Chlckaaha Express is disposed to
take a fall out of the Register on
the statehood question and then
for want of argument indulges In
some airy persiflage of a personal
character meanwhile pat ing it-
self upon the back on account of
ita selNasserted solidity with the
people of Furcell
The Expreso waives a hearing
upon the itineracy of its editor or
his need of Kindergarten instruc-
tion in Match matters but
rises o remark that the eage of
Parcell has explained the pathetic
ennui and air of has-bcen-nessthat
characterises that town.
It stands solidly with the Keg
iater.

A remark is often board that
Ohtckaaha is one of the quietest
head of police news. The state-
ment in a great measure is cor-
rect and the cause is not hard to
find.
The oify has an excellent police
department that is ever on the
alert. Some of its officials are
men of long experience in police
work and who have become widely
acquainted with tbe criminal class
of tbe sonthwest. Every train
that enters tbe city is closely
watohed and if auspicious charac
ter arrive they are given just
enough time to start somewhere
else. If any such temporarily ea
cape the vigilant eye of the offi
oer bis presence soon becomes
known and his movements are
watohed until sufficient evidence
is collected to warrant giving hlra
tbe hot foot or bis arrest. Night
i"1"1"" are given special atten
tion and there are few strangers of
that class who are not under con
slant surveillance.
It" may not be tbe theory of the
polio hut it would seem that they
work on tbe plan that it is easier
to keep criminals out of tewn than
it is to take oare of them after
they get In. The police records
and the mayor' docket may not
show a great amount of work done
by tbe officers but peace and order
prevails and that is what people j
