A rabbit had been caught In a

James M Howe formerly a resident
of .Springfield Mass. and now of Chi-

the inventor of tho sewing machine.
Ho recently relntod a curious Incident
concerning his relative's struggle for
success.
"Klias Howe almost beggared him-
self" said liu "before he discovered
where the eye of tho needle of a sew-
ing machine should be located. It Is
probablo that there aro few pel-sons
who know how It came ubout. His
original idea was to follow the model
of the ordinary needle uud have the
eye ut the heel. It never occurred to
him that It should be placed near tiie
point and ho might hare failed alto-
gether if lie had not dreamed lie was
building 11 sewing machine for a sav-
age king in u stfuiige country. Just
us iu Ills actual waking oxparieuoc he
was perplexed about tho needle's
eye. lie thought tho uiug gave him
twenty-four hours to complete the
machine nud make it sew. If not fin-
ished nt that time deatli was to bo

"Howe worked and worked and
puzzled and puzzled nud finally gave
it up. Then lie thought that he was
taken out to bo executed. Ho noticed
that tlio warriors carried spears that
were pierced at tho head. Instantly

was taken ill again and Dr. Tiuklinm
was called. The young man at that
time hud all the appearances of being
in the first stages of consumption but
upon an examination It was found
that his lungs wore sound.
Dr. Tinkhnui then called Dr. Sliee-
liun who also found that Orllliu's
lungs wero not ntTcotod. The medi-
cal men wero uiiublo to locate the
disease and the patient continued to
decline. He lias kept iu tho house

them to have set much value upon tlio
