A few minutes later Alvarita Stopped
upon the forward platform ready for

"Ain't you afraid to po out alone.
Alviry?" queried the queen mother
anxiously. "There's so .many roupli
people about. Mebbe you'd better"
"I never saw anything 1 was afraid
of yet. ma especially people and unm
in particular. I'oti't you fret I'll trot
alotip back as (iooti as I find that run-

The dust lay thick upon the bare
prouud near the tracks. Alvarita's eye
soon discovered the serrated trail of
ihe escaped python. It led across the
depot prounds and a nay down a
smaller street la the direction of the
little canyon as predicted by her.
A hundred yard-; and ihe limits of
the town were passed scattered chap-
arral sm-eeeilinp and then a noble
prove overtlow inp the bijou canyon.
TJirouph this a small bright stream
meandered. Parklike it was with a
kind of cockney ruralness further in-
dorsed by the waste papers and filled
tins of picnickers. Up this stream
and down it amoup its pseudo sylvan
pi. ides and depressions wandered the
hrlplit and iiurulllcd Alvarita. Once
she saw .evidence of the recreant rep-
tile's pnipress hi his distinctive trail
across a spread of fine sand In the ar-
royrt. The livlnp water was hound to
lure him. lie could not be far away.
So sure was she -of his Immediate
proximity that site perched herself to
Idle for a time In the curve of a preat
creeper that looped down from a phi tit
water elm. To reach this she climbed
from the pathway a little distance up
the side of a steep and nipped Incline.
Around her chaparral grew tli.ck ami
hipii.
Alvarita removed her hat and undo
Itip the oppressive convolutions of her
hair bepan to slowly arranpe it in two
'eiip. dusky plaits.
From the obseiti depths of a thick
riump of evepreen shrubs live feel
away two small jewel brlpht eyes were

"What do you want?" she nskt-J as

placid contempt. The Mexican contin-
ued' to paze i)t her and showed his
teeth in a while japped smile.
"I no hurt y you senorila" he said.
"You bet you won't" answered the
queen-sliaklnp back one finished mas-
sive plait. "But don't you think you'd
butter move on?"
"Not hurt-y you no. But maybeso
take one heso one li'l kees you call

The man smiled apain and set his
foot to ascend the slope. Alvarita
leaned swiftly and picked up a utone
the size of a cocoa nut.
"Vamoose quick" she ordered per-
emptorily "you coon!"
Tlie red of Insult burned through the
Mexican's dark skin.
"Hidulpo Yo!" he shot between his
fanps. "I am not nep-r-ro! Dlabla
bonita for that you shall pay me."
He made two quick upward steps
this time hut the stone hurled by no
weak arm struck him square in the
chest. Ho stappered back to the f (Kit-
way swerved half around and met
another sight that drove all thouphts
of tlie girl from his head. She turned
her eye to see what had diverted his
Interest. A man with red-brown curl-
Inp hair and a melancholy sunburned
smooth shaven face was coming up
the pa Hi twenty yards away. Around
the Mexican's waist was buckled'a pis-
tol belt with two empty holsters. He
lit.d laid aside his sixes possibly in
the jacal of the fair Pancha and had
forpolten tlietn when the passing of
the fairer Alvarita had enticed hint to
Iter trail. His hands now flew instinc-
tively to the holsters; but flndinp the
weapons pone he spread his finpers
outward with the eloquent abjuring
deprecating. Latin posture and stood
like a rock. Seelnp his plipht. the
newcomer unbuckled his own belt con-
taining; two revolvers threw It upon
the ground and continued to advance.
"Splendid!" murmured Alvarita.
with flashinp eyes.
As I'.oh Buckley according to the
mad code of bravery that his sensitive
( iiscience imposed upon his cowardly
nerves abandoned his guus and closed
In upon his enemy the old inevitable
nausea of abject fear wrunp him. The
hot .Tune day turned to moist Novem-
ber. And still he advanced spurred
by a mandatory pride that strained iis
uttermost npahist his weakling flesh."
Tlie distance between the two men
slowly lessened. Tlie Mexican stood
immovable waltinp. When scarce live
yards separated tliem a Utile shower
of loosened pravel rattled down from
above to the ranger's fcetP.IIe sta ne-
ed upward with instinctive cant ion. A
pair of dark eyes brilliantly soft and
fierlly tender encountered and held his
(wn. The most fearful heart and the
boldest one in nil the Itio Bravo coun-
try exchanged a silent and Inscrutable
communication. Alvarita. still seated
within her vine leaned forward above
the breast hiph chaparral. One hand
was laid across her bosom. One great
dark braid curved forward over her
shoulder. Her lips were parted her
f.i'-e was lit with what seemed but
wonder great and absolute wonder.
I'er eyes linpered upon Buckley's. Let
no one ask cr presume to tell through
what subtle medium the miracle was
performed. As by a lightning flash
two clouds will accomplish counter-
poise and compensation of electric sur-
charge so on that eye glance the man
received his complement of manhood
and tlie maid conceded what enriched
her womanly grace by its loss.
The Mexican suddenly stirring ven-
tilated his attitude of apathetic wait-
ing by conjuring swiftly from his boot-
leg a long knife. Buckley cast aside
hu hat and laughed once aloud like a
happy schoolboy at a frolic. Then
empty handed he sprang nimbly and
Garcia met liiiu without default.
So soon was the engagement ended
that disappoint mont imposed upon the
ranger's warlike ecstasy. Instead of
d"Hling the traditional downward
stroke the Mexican lunged straight
with his knife. Buckley took tlie pre
carious chance and caught his wrist
fair and firm. Then ho delivered the
pood Saxon knockout blow always so
pathetically disastrous to the fistless
Latin races and Garcia was down
and out with his head under n clump
of prickly pears. The ranger looked
up again to t he Queen of the Serpents
Alvarita scrambled down to the
pa 111
"I'm mighty glad I happened along
when I did." said Ihe ranger.
"lie -lie frightened me so" cooed
Alvarita
They did not hear the long low hi.ss
of the python under the shrubs.
Then came galloping to the spot the
civic authorities and lo I hem the ran
per ;i warded the prostrate disturber
of ;he pence whom they bore away
limply n cross the saddle' of One of
their mounts. But Buckley and Alva-
rita liturere I.
Slowly . slow ly they walked. Th.
ranger regained his belt of weapons.
With a line timidity she begged tlie
Indulgence of lingering the preat "forty-lives"
whh little "olis" and "ahs"
of newborn delicious shyness.
Tlie cnuoiiciio was growing dusky.
Beyond Its terminus in the river bluff
I hey could see the outer world Jet
suffused with the waning glory of sun-
set. A scream - a piercing scream of
flight from Alvarita. Back jdie cotv-
ercd and the ready protecting arm or
Buckley formed her refuse. What
terror f 0 dire as to thus beset the close
of the reign of the never before daunt-
ed queen?
Across the path ther crawled a
caterpillar a horrid fiiz.y two inch
