CHICKASHA OKLAHOMA FRIDAY JANUARY 1 1909.
COST OF ADVERTISING.
The unwake merchant often
wonders how tome rival "can af-
ford to ipend io much money
for advertising. " H( la aura that
it would bankrupt him in ahort
order to "plunge" Into publicity
on the tame acale that the other
.fellow doet.
The "other fellow" la not
worrying about the "coat" of hit
advertising for the simple rea-
aon that he doesn't have to pay
it. The competitor who cannot
"afford" to advertise really In
effect pays the billa of the man
who can "afford" it.
. He pays them In the loss of
business caused by his failure
to advertise. The business he
ought to have his "ahare" of
the trade In his line goes In
large part to the competitor
who seeks It who can afford to
advertise for it The profits on
the trade drawn away from the
timid advertiser by the aggres-
sive one pays the tatter'a ad-
vertising bills and leave a com-
fortable surplus.
This It a fact which progres-
sive merchants are proving all
the time so it ought to have
some personal significance to
the overcautious business men
who are waiting to get rich be-
fore "risking" adequate adver-
tising campaign. Fort Worth

circulation considered the cheapest
advertising' to be bought in Chickasha

comes this way will receive the most
prompt and careful attention.
To our faithful city and county of-
ficialsmay the new year make their
duties more pleasant and may every
mother's son of you hold your office
until your successor is elected and
qualified.
To Cad Allard the best booster who
ever wielded a pen and In 1909 may
he see the fair Queen of the Washita
the peerless city of the New South-
west future metropolis of Oklahoma
blossom forth as the rose in all the
lovellneKS pictured by his fertile fancy.
To the merchants the doctors the
lawyers the preachers the school
teuchern mechanics and workers if
every station and degree may pros-
perity attend you every day.
Hut why enumerate further? We
hfive so many Kood wishes for so many
people that the yasr would pass be-
fore the list could be completed. A
glad bright happy successful year to
every one of you!
Just to keep the record straight and
for the enlightenment of several thou-
sand of our dear readers men and
women we feel It our duty to give
place to the following note from a
fashion magazine: "ine correct
coiffure adopted by the majority has
the hulr brushed up smoothly from the
nape of the neck to the knot itself.
There Is no bulging out nor sagging
down. It Is a clean Grecian sweep
usually held in phce for a wide bar-
ette." With this hint we trust the
l'idles will be able to do the rest.
At a recent meeting of t'ne El Reno
Commercial Club the boosters talked
about getting an alfalfi mill the state
capital and lastly appointed a commit-
tee on road improvement. They may
get all the good things they are after
but of one thing we feel certain: They
will niske a winning If they persevere
In the good roads work.
A press dispatch telling about an
Oklahoma woman finding a valuable
pearl In Ohio recalls the story of .sn
Ohio man who found a fortune in
Oklahoma also a similar story of
several hundred thousand other people
from other states who had the same
luck.
We can't help but think that the
only Night Riders that Okbhoma ever
had existed In the fevered imagina-
tion of a few excitable folks who com-
municated their wild fancies to the
zealous press correspondents.
Chickasha did some going in 1 OOS
but this year she is going to break all
tecords. It will take Cad Allard a
month to tell all about the wonders
accomplished when the year closes.

We are Thy children; canst Thou un-
derstand How far from parenthood Thy child
may stray?
How He may fill his hours with
childish play
With little games whose uttermost
demand
Is but for scraps of colored candle

"These are the stars" hi cries "the

These all the pow'rs of darkness shill

HAS BEEN VERY SUCCESSFUL.
The coming of Fred G. Conrad's pro-
duction of the "Two Orphans" will be
awaited with interest. It will bo the
attraction at the opera house Friday
night Jan. 1. The continued success
of this pliy Is due to its substantial
merits and Manager Conrad has made
sure of getting all of them by secur-
ing the only authorized Kate Claxton
version. For this he la to be con-
gratulated since the temptation is
strong to economize by using some
garbled adaption which hides th
true greatness of this masterpiece.
Mr. Conrad seems to have been un-
usually successful In getting together
a company which Is unusually strong
and with proper equipment of scenery
which he promises the engagement
here should add to his reputation as
a producer who can be trusted to of-
fer something excellent.
