Texas used to claim the distinction
of having the first automobile rail-
road. Five cars used to make tegu-
lar trips on a three-hour si hedule over
the 43 miles between Lubbock and
Hale counties. The line had a pri-
vate right of way fenced off as fur a
railway and its roadbed was worked
by section bands to this ' extent it
was kept scooped free of sand. The
drivers (this In the sense in which

the 45 miles in three hours because
the line carried United States mail
and was under contract to keep a
