How a pauper obtained wool to knit
sotks and mittpns. which he sold to
enable him to buy tobacco was de-
scribed to the West Ham magistrates
recently. The pauper was Thomas
Ledgett 49 years old. an Inmate of the
Stratford branch of the Poplar Vnion
and be was charged with damaging
a number of blankets the property of
the guardians.
The master of the workhouse r.jund
that the wool biuding the edjsos of
blanket was being removed and that
iu five days no fewer Hian 31.3 blankets
were so damaged. A sraich failed to
discover who was taking the wool but.
when Ledgett was removed to the
farm colony at Uiiudoa it came to the
knowledge of the master that tie line!

day the master went to I.aindon. and
on heart bins the piisoner s bed he
found a bag filled with balls of pink
wool evidently stripped from thu
blankets and three socks knitted with
pink wool. Ledgett. who denied that
