WHY THEY DON'T
CHURCH.
GO TO
A local pastor recently asked the
question: "Why do not more men
attend church?"
The question would perhaps 1
more clearly stated if it were put in
this form: "Why do fewer men
than women attend church?" Thii
doubtless brings out the real pur
port of the inquiry. In giving an
answer to the question even thu
restricted it is difficult to avoid
speculating on the general question
why there is not more popular in
terest in the cause of religion and
the churches. But this is not the
point of the present inquiry.
It may as well be stated at the
outset that only an empirical an-
swer can be given. Talk to a doz-
en people and you will have as
many answers each giving the re-
sult of his own experience and ob-
servations. All sorts of superficial answers
will be given 0f which the follow-
ing are samples:
ligion."
"They are too lazy."
"They have their lodges club
rooms and other more interesting
places to go."
No doubt their is a grain of truth
in all these reasons and a dozen
more that might be given. When
closely analyzed however.there will
doubtless be deeper causes found
back of all of these assigned causes
Passing over the inborn wicked-
nessin man of which the old theo-
logians made much and which they
tell us makes him prefer darkness
rather than light; and disregarding

of church life which are less attrac-
tive to men than to women it
seems cle; r that the indifference of
men to religion must be due in
some degree.to the manner in which
its appeals are prtsented by the av-
erage preacher. To take any other
viewisto reflect either upon the
moral make-up of men or upon the
merits of the gospel to which they
show indifference.
The fact that there is a radical
di fference in the mental as well as
in the physical constitution of the
two sexes must be considered. It of
is not to be presumed that womanl
is inferior to man intellectually
Comparisons of this kind are r.
necessary but that there is a differ-
ence is as patent to the ordinary
observer as to the student of psy-
chology. Woman is intuitive and
emotional where man is reflective
fniIepaatic There is a great 1

the two sexes toward z.v.y proposi
tion that is presented.
Now the average preacher
through deficiency in experience
education or natural insight into
the problems that confront him
.eenis to lose sight of these facts.
He does not preach a manly gospel:
. e. a gospel adapted to the mental
attitude and the moral needs of
men. Assuming to speak as the
oracle of God and assuming that
his utterances as such must be ac-
ipted he overlooks the fact that
many of his hearers will admit no
such assumptions but will look up
on him as a man shaking to man.
The ordinary man of common sense

by argument based upon admitted
or proved facts. Where a woman
might know intuitively that the
preacher is right.the man will have
to be shown. Fine flashes of lofty
sentiment and eloquent assertions
of divine truth are coolly met by
the question "How do you know
it?"
If Tie preacher will interpret the
gospel in the light of modern scien
tific and historical investigations if
he will consider the mental atti-
tude and spiritual needs' o his male
hearers if he willappl? the essen
tial truths of religion to modern so
cial conditions in all their complex
ity if he will be a man among men
working not wholly for the ad
vancement of the interests of his
particular
denoniuation but for
the entire social organism if he
Iel will prove to be the 'power of
God unto the salvation" of men as
well as of women.
A statement signed by a few
Cherokee citizens at St. Louis the
other day to the effect that 75 per
cent of the people of the Indian
Territory desired two states of In-

one of the curious breaks that peo-
pie sometimes make and for which
there is no excuse. In the first
