!I0 TRUTH IN IT
Story of Big Losses Discredited By
Japs and Doubted by Russians.
London July 16. The Tokio
correspondent of the Times in a
dispatch filed at 9:45 p. 111.. July
15 says that the St. Petersburg
story of a Japanese repulse with
heavy casualties at Port Arthur
July 10 is wholly discredited in
Tokio where no such rejorts have
been received. It is believed that
the story originated in Shanghai.
The Shanghai correspondent of
the Morning Post cabling under
date of July 15 says:
"A naval engagement took .place
off Port Arthur."
St. Petersburg July 15 2:25 a.
in. The lack of further official
news regarding the engagement at
PortArthuron the night of July 10
is puzzling. That the Japanese
were heavily defeated is not doubt
ed here but the absence of further
information as to the extent of the
disaster that befell them is begi li
ning to be seriously questioned
Definite news has been received
from Viceroy Alexieff's headquar-
ters at Mukden that the week be-
fore the engagement at Port Ar-
thur Maj. Gen. Fock administered
a scve 'e defeat on the Japanese on
July 4 and 5 driving them from
the heights commanding Lunsan-
tan pass with a loss of 2000.
This is regarded as proof that there
has been heavy fighting before the
fortessof Port Arthur and as mak-
ing the silence of Tokio regarding
it all the more significant.
