Hector Edwin C. Wltherell of the
Kplscopal church at Stillwater has
fallen from grace llo has oloped
from thatclty with Mrs. Anna Stovens
the wife of another mau leaving his
wife and child behind.
Although this very sensational affair
occurred several days ngo tho news
did not leak out until yesterday when
Mrs. Wlthorell tho desortcd wife and
child came to this city from Stillwater
and sought protection and 'comfort at
tho home of good Ilishop llrooke of
this city. Stillwater people as well as
those of this city are still Ignorant of
the affair and this announcement will
drop as a thunder bolt from a clear
sky.
Tho homes of Mr. Wltherell and Mr.
Stevens at Stillwater adjoin and it Is
alleged that the gentleman of tho
cloth has been casting soft glancos on
Mrs. Stevcus for several weeks past.
A few days since Hector Wltherell left
his homo telling his wife thut ho was
going to Topoka to receive orders
for tho priesthood. Mrs. Stev-
ens left on the name day;
to her husband's question sho euid
she was coming to Guthrie to vlf.lt
friends.
Since then nothing has been seen or
heard of cither Itev. Wltherell or Mrs.
Stevens.
Not receiving a letter from her hus-
band and with a woman's keen intui-
tion believing that not all was
serene Mrs. Wltherell wired to a
Topeka minister for particulars of her
husband. She received the reply that
Ilov. Wltherell had not becu seen in
Topeka. Mrs. Wltherell then made
up her mind that her husband had
deserted her ran olT with Mrs. Stevens
and disgraced two homes. At the
solicitation of Ilishop llrooke sho
came to Guthrie with hor child.
Hev. Wltherell is well known by all
(iiithrlc people. From March to Sep-
tember of last year he was rector of
the Kplscopal church in this city and
he and his family were highly es-
teemed and respected. Krom here
Iter. Wltherell went to Stillwater
where he has been doing good work in
the Lord's vineyard. Ills blrangc
beh avior will call down the severest
condemnation. Mrs. Wltherell Is un
estimable lady and Is deserving of the
sympathy of all In hor trouble

SPITTINQ SERPEN VS.
Thry Are Able to llltml it .Mkii by Pro-
Jeitlnic it 1 lillil Into II l t'.jr.
Tho African explorer V. Iloehuel
on his voyage to lake t Hudolph und
Stephanie encountered one day after
a long rulny spoil rolled up in u cor-
ner of the basket in which the dishes
of the expedition were carried u ser-
pent of narrow girth und about twenty-seven
inches long. His servant
armed himself with a long dirk
to kill the serpent hut the moment lio
approached tho basket he fell back
with u heartrending cry ond covered
his eyes with his hand. Tho snuko
had projected into them a tiny stream
of burning liquid which caused terri-
ble buffering
Iloehuel came up and placed himself
In such u position that tho wind would
blow the liquid past his eyes should
the serpent defend itself in the same
manner it hud done before. As soon
as the snake caught sight of him It
lifted ito head and squirted two drops
of black tluid upon his neck which
however produced o burning sensa-
tion on the skin. An Arab guide who
had heard the cries of tho explorer's
servant came up and wrapping his
turban around his hand endeavored
to make a dive into the basket for the
snake. A moment later he too fell
back blinded und covering his oyo&
with his arm. Iloehuel dhl not seek
to repeat the experiment. He turned
the basket over on the ground aud
the serpent In its flight was killed
with sticks ho that the mystery c mid
not be solved as to tho nature of its
pcular squirting qualities.

If hitherto there we.ro any lingering
cobwebs of doubts Iu the minds of the
people of Guthrie relative to thu till -enls
und capabilities of tho pupils of
the titithrio public schools these
doubUt wore dispelled 1 nt evening at
the McKennou opera house when 70
pupils tho llower of tho schools gave
tin entertainment iu honor of thu lifth
birthday umitvci.snry of Okluhoma for
the laudablu purpose of raising funds
for establishing u school library
The oui'iisloii was one of supreme en-
joyment both to participants und spec-
tators. '1 he opera house was packed
to the dooM and never was a more
appreciative nudltuico enclosed within
four walls. Tho progrum which was
replete with bright literary musical
and nursery goms was opescd with
invocation followed by a stirring
uhoriis '"To the Friends Wo Love" by
the school.
Miss Nellie Henfrow followed with a
pleasing oration on "Oklahoma." It
was 11 splendid panegyric 011 this fair
territory nud was delivered Iu 11 mas-
terly manner Miss Nellie possesses a
clear distinct and well modulated
voice and hor effort was greeted with
euthusiclio npphtttpp
"The Three Hells" was tho title of
Miss Grace Gri 111 lhN declntniition. It
was nicely delivered mid proved a rich
treat
One of tho features of tho evening
wus the drill by tho Second grade.
Tho many intricate muiuuuvcrs und
evolutions were executed with sur-
prising perclslon by the little folks
und much credit is due the teachers
for tholr hard work in bringing about
this high degree of perfection in the
children
Amy llrooks recited in a lively nud
pleasing manner "The Little HUcic
Kyed Kebel" und Iono Coyle a cut
little tot told of "Papa's Letter" in
exquisite manner.
Tho "Mother Goose" drill by the
Primary grade was a rare treat und
captured tho house. The costumes
wore elaborate nnd appropriate aud
would have drawn udmlratioii from
tho original Mother Gooae if she ever
existed.
Helen Hyde In inimitable manner
spoke of her big sister's beau nud
Martin Oeltuis recited "The News-
boy's Debt" iu excellent style. "Coun
try Sleighing" by Jennie Murphy ac-
companied on tho piano by Miss Cora
Stephens was spleu lid Viugio Hoc
detailed "Tho Peril of the Puiisongor
Train" in a dashing manner. Stephen
Ilradley and Sam Smith in thu song
entitled "You Know" were very good
"Money Musk" was given by Irene
Turner in telling manner Miss Tur-
ner possesses much dramatic ability.
illauehe lluuso being absent hor
number was tilled by Iono Coyle who
danced the "Jtyo Waltz." Jim Wo-
muck u cute little fellow was the
comedian of tho performance. Pre-
vious to the last number Prof. Mnl-
lory appeared before thu curtain and
delivered a neat address in which ho
tli nuked thejpeople for tholr presence.
Ho told of the growth of the schools
and his ambition to establish a good
library. His remarks were well rc-
ceited. The performance closed with tho
"Mother Goose Medley" by tho pri-
mary grades. It was splendidly mount-
ed mid the little scholars did them-
selves proud. Tho entertainment was
a glittering success and too much
praibo cannot be given tho teachers
for their work iu training the pupils
Nearly 1000 people wore iu tho luniso
and all were a unit iu declaring tho
Guthrie school children the brightest
nud smartest in tho country.
