commerce. This development offers
a new opporl unity lo American farm
ers especially those who cultivate
tlie Kandy loams of some of the
Southern and Western states and
Klvus them a wider interest in the
expansion of .American foreign
trade. The reason of this improve-
ment in status for the peanut is
found In the discovery by the lirit-
; itdi lmrd put to it for food during
the war lhat a fino quality of edi
ble oil is produced from peanuts.
The National Foreign Trade Coun-
cil has information from Loudon to
' the effect that an official commit-
tee of distinguished British scien-
tists lias been appointed to study
the question of edible oils and fats
mid this committee is now study-
ing the humble "groundnut" as they
call it in lOngland to see what it can
' do lo relieve the pangs of ilrilish
hunger.
Where the special opportunity of
American farmers and exporters
comes in is through the decrease
of production of peanuts in India
and Africa during the war. Those
countries used to export '!.'(lWH) tons
of peanuts mutually before the win
and a good share of them came to
the United Stales where with cir-
cuses picnics baseball games and
other public! attractions our pow-
ers of peanut consumption were ex-
pansive and expanding. Hut while
this production was decreasing dur-
ing (lie war Importation of peanuts
into Great llritain was growing from
1 101)0 tons in JUKI lo i:'.r.0i)0 tons
in 1'JIS. This gives a. glimpse of the.
increasing market for peanuts in
Kngland and it is well known that
the peanut habit once formed i;;
well nigh unbreakable.
The I'Veneli have long known the.
beneficial uses of peanuts. As Ion1;
ago as nil!! more thn MMI.OOO tons
were imported into France. That
market will come back in a short
lime and coupled wilii the grow-
ing liritish demnd if offers an at-
tractive selling place for American
peanut growers. American fanners
have not linen- much accustomed to
take either peanuts or foreign trade
verv seriously but I he time has
come for them -to wake up lo the
advantages of both.
