Grand Opera in the I'nited States
and iis Singers;
Two generations of Americans
liavo attended grand opera in their
native land and during the past
century nearly all of tho great
wingers of the world have journey-
ed hither to charm lis with their
Hongs and to bo charmed by tho
rich golden rewards wo give them.
These rewards have been so lib-
eral within tho past few years
that the grand opera singers of
tho world aro anxious to como to
America where they can make
five six and even sometimes ten
times as much rs they customar-
ily receive in Europe They
get their schooling and make their
reputations in Europo but they
make in America tho fortunes
which enable them to set up es-
tablishments wnieh after their ex-
travagant methods of expression
they call estates in Italy France
and Foland.
Jean do Reseke who is con-
sidered the 1 'greatest grand opera
tenor' the world has ever seen
and who is generally conceded to
bo the premier tenor never gets
leer tnnn fifteen hundred dollars
and Boinetitnes as much as thirty-
five hundred for an evening m
America while in Jtaly France
or Germany ho would have to be
content with two hundred dollars
while his reward in London might
go as high as five hundred dollars.
Naturally therefore we get in
the large citiies cf America the
best talent the world holds and
the past two seasons in .New York
have beeu the most brilliant the
world has known.
Recently an American artist
who lives in 1'aris was visiting
his laiuiiy in isew York lie
was a constant auenuant at the
opera ills people were quiet

Tlioj tuD.i!;! as nearly every
oho docs nock that Art whether
iu Tiiu-ie or ptintinir or in any.
ti ing pertaining to tho higher ex-
pression of tho Rcautiful in life
flour in Lies better in Paris than any-
where else. I'he idea that in prac-
tical America their artist son and
brother could hear better music
than in Paris was to them ineon-
ceiveable and with good reason
for beautiful Paris is tho home of
Art and all Art is better encour-
aged and developed there than
here.
There can bo no satisfactory
grant! opera unless the chief sing-
iei's the soprano tho contralto
the tenor tho baritone and the
bass aro adequate. It is likely
that tliey in their individual eff-
orts give tho greatest pleasure to
the average opera goers. They
certainly get the great rewards
both in money and in- tho ap-
plause .which is as dear to their
hearts as money itself.
But unless tho ensemble be liar-1
niuniobs the greatest stars 111 the
oneratio firmament will fail to
shine with any grcrt brilliancy
and this ensemble includes tho
stars - tho men an I women with
great names and superb voices
and the chorus ami tho orchesta
also. All these must be brought
together so that tho conductor's
baton controls each and all as Pad-
erwiski's fingers do tho keys of
the piano which responds to his
magic touch.
