CHICKASHA IXD. TKK. AUGUST 3 1905
A FORTUNATE LAND
A cok r kskj.v DKNT of the Exi-kkss describes
the scenes along Rural Route No 2. The picture
may seem a trifle florid and a litt'e overdrawn but it
is not so. Rather it fails through the weakness of
words to adequately portray the wonders of the mag-
nificent country in the midst of which Chickasha is
located.
It is not alone along R. F. I). Xo 2 that the
scenes described are to be found but in every direction
one may behold the prodigal gifts of nature enhanced
by human industry. In whatever direction you go
you will find happy homes a contented people farms
that yield in abundance every variety of crops to the
slightest touch of the husbandmen. There probably
never was a time when the country presented a more
prosperous appearance than it does now; never was a
time when more splendid prospects for bountiful
crops of corn and cotton were to be seen. It is indeed
a fortunate land in which we are situated. With
such prospects 110 wonder our people are looking
forward to unprecedented business activity during the
coming months.
The prosperity of the town and country are one.
Abundant harvests for the farmer means lively busi-
ness for the merchant. The marvellous progress
made in the new country to the west of us is only a
s imple of what will be accomplished within a very
few ytara in the ftrti!e ao.rs cf Iidian Territory laud
that are rapidly being- brought under cultivation and
as ihis j.roces' continues Chickasha will reap corres-
ponding benefits.
It i.- true that there are limits beyond which a
town dependent ur.on agricultural resources can net:
go. but Chickasha has rot reached these limits j
Thousands of acers in the territory that belong t usj
have i-carctly been touched and even thoe -which arej
under cultivation have not yet been made to yield the
rich returns of which they -ir capable. This territory
capable of supporting more than double the popu
lation it now has and if we may judge from the pre
sent movtn;ent of immigrrtion it will be only a few
years until we i-hall have this ptt illation. What this
means to the town can rtadily be seen; it means more
products to sell mure industries more business
greater-proj-jierity fcr n erchants a larger and better
town.
The future of Chickasha would be assured even
if we had nothing but the fertile acers surrounding
us from which to draw but this is not all we have
and shall have. With our railroad interests the
manufacturing enterprises now established ard that
will be established in the futuer the larger develon-
ment ofj out wholesale interests there is every
reason for us to be encouraged over the outlook and
to redouble our efforts to make the possible the
actual.
A business knocker is about as bad an article as
a town knocker. You know him he is the man who
is always running dow n his competitor. He doesn't
realize that the surest way to make business for his
rival is to knock on him. The broad-minded business
man goes about his own business and lets his compet-
itor do the same. If his neighbor prospers.he is glad
of it. He relies wholly upon his own merits to build
up his own business and doesn't seek to interfere with
his neighbor. His policy is the only wise course to
pursue. Don't knock on your neighbor. The busi-
ness men of a town should stand togetner each shar-
ing! aicl rejoicing in the prosperity of the other j
Kocking is too small a business for respectable people
to engage in.
It has been discovered that John D. Rockefeller
did not amass his fortune through illegal combinations
and the throtling of competition but by learning how
to eliminate the smell from petroleum. Possibly he
will be able to take the "taint" from his gold by the
same processes. lx.
