Thu artialo published in yesterday's
I.KAl)i:n regarding the discipline and
sanitary regulations ut thu Logan
county jail created a ripple o( tulle
not only at the baslllo itself but among
tli 3 charitable people of the city. By
tome the charges preferred against
Sherilt Painter and .luilor .lu.-lcson
were pionoiiuccd us only too true
while others si outud the allegations as
the morbiu hallucinations of a prison-
er's brain
Yesterday afternoon Sherill Painter.
in order to eorroboeato his side of the
ease invited TllK I.K.v!ii:it man as well
Us tepresi-ntntivus from the other lo -al
papers and i it'irens to visit the jail
und personally nspu tits multifarious
v. Tilings The invitation was
n ei-pted and the bastile was thor-
oughly examined. Splendid discipline
is maintained at the jail and if tyr-
anny is practiced by the jail olllcials.
it was not of course observable to
the eyes of the visitors while there.
The county jail is a substantial
structure of goodly size built of cor-
rugated iron. The mge appointments
are of the latest patterns and four
patent combination locks open and
close simultaneously till the cell or
outer doors. There are eight commo-
dious cells within the cage fronting
on well ventilated corridors.
At present there are twenty-light
prisoners confined in the bastile and
from two lo five men languish in eacli
cell. The visit of yesterday revealed
the fact that the jail corridors tire
scrupulously clean uud according to
the olllcials the lloors are washed
from four to live times a week. As far
as could be dls erned there were
blankets enough in each cell tind the
prisoners ought not to sutler from
cold. As for the food thnt prepared
and given to the prisoners yesterduy
was substantial and wholesome. The
dinner consisted of several hllces of
bread onions turnips Irish potatoes
sweet potatoes beef steak and coffee
Whether this ineuli is served dally is
not known. Several prisoners inti-
mated lo Tiik Lkaiiku reporter yester-
day that visits of newspaper men to
jail ure like an oasis in u desert as
they cause the lid of the larder to
open like a yawning abyss.
Kilt malice may have inspired these
intimations The majority of tho men
contlued in the bastile were questioned
regarding their treatment food bed-
ding bathing privileges etc. A man
debarred of His liberty Is not likely
to bo contented or satisfied but the
greater number of those Interviewed
expressed themselves as well cared
for ami no kick coming. Prisoners
Frank Sloat and G A. Wilson two in-
telligent young men had kind words
to say of Sheriff Painter it nil .Jailor
Jaehson and as they are long time
birds their remarks are worth some-
thing. On. tho other hand vigorous
kicks came from men quartered in a
cell .n the west side. They averred
that Jackson was overbearing and
blankets few and far between. They
declared tliut yesterday's dinner was
the best in quality and quuntlty served
them in three months and that to ask
for a drink of water during the
night timu was almost a crime
i Said oue of them: "Say don' t give our
names away but I'll swear oil the bible
that this jail is tough. We get no de-
cent treatment at all. Some of our
food is at time.- decayed. If we kick
.ve ure told uoi to eat it and if we per-
sist in kicking Jackson puts us on
bread and water. That ncgresa Lew
is allowed all kinds of privileges while
we are couuuually mistreated."
.Mopping to tno next cell the scribe
hearu tnis: "Say cull dem fellers in
dure is just jealous. Dose tramps and
deru kicKs tton't go. Wo gits lots to
eat and Jackson treats us tip-top. See."
Dero mugs in dero don't wash nohow
uud what's baths to them. Dey's
mad at Lew bectiuse she talks to us
uud not to theiu."
During the visit the jail physician
Dr. Kimberly came in to see Tom Sliel-
ton a negro prisoner wha is suffeiiug
with pleurisy. The doctor stated that
the buuliury condition ol tno Jull was
good but that more buth tubs should
be provided. Ho said the food served
was wholesome and the bedding very
good.
Sheriff Painter deputy Harry Pain-
ter and Jailor Jackson kindly showed
tho visitors tliroijdi the buihliug
and unswered all questions. Jail-
or Jackson is an intelligent
colored man and has had eight years
experience in jail worlc. beveral pels

did not appear that suih ptullonal ijoieru

Two remarluiblo fcatiirrs of Hie transaction

extraordlnarv haste not to say precipitancy

with the treaty. It appeared that a so called
committee ot safety ostensibly the souric of
the rcxolt aualnst the constitutional einrrn

tho lltlidav of January that on Monday ttie
loth the United Stales forces wore lauded at
