THE LEGITIMATE IN DRAMA
Every once in a while the ques-
tion of what propriety will or will
not permit on the stage arises. A
storm of indignation arises whtn
certain plays presenting seamy
phases of life are put on the stage
An instance in point a few years
ago was" 'Sappho" which aroused
so much criticism. In this instance
the objection was undoubtedly well
taken.
The only legitimate purpose of
the drama in the strictest sense is
to portray life as it is. When it
attempts more it is artificial and
untrue. This is not saying that
the drama has no educational in-
fluence. On the contrary it be
comes a powerful factor when it
depicts real life. When the dram-
atist paints a true picture it is sure
to have a strong ethical influence
upon those to whom it is rightly
presented.
It is admitted that there are
phases of life which are not whole
some and we do not care to see on
the stage or elsewhere. In some
instances however we are prone
to be too modest. For example.in
"The Minister's Son" a secondary
feature of the ylay is t!ie down-fall
of an innocent girl. It is very truly
portrayed and counterparts of it in
actual life are too numerous.
Here however vice is not pre-
sented in an attractive form nor is
the victim of it made to appear as
a hero. The everlasting Nemesis
does its work and the inevitable
consequences of sin and folly follow
much in the manner that is seen
in the books of George Elliot. At
the same tiiuc aronnd the central
figure in the play are seen the
purest and noblest prihciples' of
virtue at work and the effect is
wholesome. The proper perspecive
is observed in the play and there
are no false colorings of vice or
virtue.
Whether the features that are
generally the subject of criticism
may or may ntt be introduced into
a play depends altogether upon!
the manner in which they are
presented and the general atmos
phere of the play in the majority
of instances it is far better that
they should be omitted but wbre
they do enter in the proper propor
tion and are shown in their' true
aspect there is little reason for
Holding up hands in holy horror
Already premonitions of the aj-
proaching city election are be-in;;
hetrd. If indications don't fa i!
it will be a lively scrap. Mayor
chief-oi -police t reasurer and alder-
men are to be elected" According
to arrangements made last spring
the democrats will name their
candidates by primary election.
Political lines will l'e drawn but
tiie men wno will get the voles wili
be men who will command the
snpport of the independent voters
as well as the party strength.
The real estate in Chickash will
be assessed this year and the taxes
on it will be colleected. This will
be a great relief to the city finances
and ought lo pave the way for
many public improvements. It
will give the city funds to build
crossings and will start the side
walk question in earnest. If the
collection of taxes irom real estate
can be forced the city can compel
property owners to put downside-
walks. Now let the city dads get
busy with the sidewalk question.

At Muskogee a petition is being
circulated calling for the immediate
passage of the bill. Chickasha
should do her part in securing the
enactment of the law... Her re
presentatives should be instructed
to work for it.
According to the report made by
the cbairmau of tl waterworks
committee it cost Ardmore $155 to
run her waterworks station during
the month of December including
salary of man wood coal etc.
During the month 5 157610 gallons
cf water were pumped.
.... -.'''..
The council did the proper thing
in granting churches and schools
free water. These are all iu a
sense public institutions. Both
the public and private schools have
the free use of water. Our two
private schools are Roberts IJusi
ness College and St. Joseph's
School. The former is doing more
advertising for the benefft ofChick-
asha perhaps than an institution
here and is bringing many stud-
ents to town. It deserres encour
agement. St. Joseph's School Ins
about 125 students many of these
from town. The expense of edu-
cating these children does not come
out of the revenues of the city and
it is nothing but right that the
school should have the same privi-
leges in the use of water that the
public school has. The council
took a broad-minded view in taking
the action which they did. The
motion passed unanimously a fact
which speaks well for the council.
It shows that that .body is willing
to encourage churches and insti
tutions of learning and is a gord
example for other towns.
