Fenian Invar.lon of Canada.
On the (!th of June In 18(MI Presi-
dent Johnson Issued a proclamation
forbidding the Fenians a revolution-
ary society aiming .to free Ireland
from lirltlsh rule to organize and arm
In the territory of the United Slates
with Intent to Invade Canada. The
Fenians In a body of 1!"i00 Including
many ox-Union soldiers of Irish birth
had assembled at Niagara Fnlls nnd
crossed Into Canada on the 1st of .Tune
The following day they engaged In a
skirmish with the Canadian militia
and were driven back Into the United
Slates where 700 of them were arrest-
ed and held for a few months.
American Clipper Ships.
In the days of the famous clipper
ships the American vessel was sec-
ond to none writes Frederick A. Col-
lins In Hoys' Life. No other country
could build ships at once so utanclf
and so speedy. Records were estab-
lished which hnve never been sur-
passed by sailing craft and even with
the uso of steam were not bettered
for nearly half a century. In 1H.TJ the
Sovereign of the Seas sailed i:i miles
In a single dny. The Mghtnlng crossed
the Atlantic in 1.1 days and i!0 hours
and the .Tames Illalne of 2500 tons
made the voyage from Boston to Liver-
pool in 12 days and 0 hours. Although
America led the way with the first
trans-Atlantic steamship she til-
lowed the sovereignty of the seas to
slip gradually from her. At the be-
ginning of tlio war most of her ton-
nage was afloat on the Creat Lakes or
engaged In coastwise trnlllc and her
deep-sea fleet was very small.
How Great Ideas Are Formed.
It Is only by knowing and applying
natural laws that man has been able
to develop the submarine the nlr-
plane wireless the phone and a thou-
sand other things that nrc now thought
commonplace. Sometimes he happens
upon a great fact by accident. Rut usu-
ally It's the patient study of a life-
time that brings the reward. I'allence
and persistence are the means that
bring man to the extremes where the
golrl lies. Shallow men talk and pro-
nounce opinions. Deep thinkers muse
and reason and try ngaln before the re-
ward conies. P.ut It's bound to come
when tliey harness their forces.
The Fiddler's Bill.
The world contains a great many
people who are busy paying the fid-
dler. For pome reason or another
they hnve neglected opportunities and
now they are trying to redeem the
time. Some are Just plain fools and
they know If. Others are too dense
to know they don't know and It's Im-
possible to tell tliem. Others are Just
mediocre people who have mussed
things tip and now they are trying to
iron them out. But It's all the same.
It's tho present trying to correct the
follies that are past. Wo call It pay-
ing the tiddler. It's like going to a
country dance and then when you
have had all the fun you have to dig
down and pay the fiddler. A good
many people have to pay the fiddler
because they got the notion they were
smarter than other folks.
Mystery cf Colonial Days.
In 1070 on .Tune 12 the settlement
of Iladley Mass. was attacked by a
force of 700 Indians. When the In-
habitants were in the greatest danger
n mysterious Englishman suddenly ap-
peared nnd led a counteratlack
against the Indians who were defeated
and driven off. The si ranger who had
never been seen before in the village
was caid to be (ienerul fjoffe one of

There Is nothing like a talk with
one of your own citizens for giving
liopo and encouragement to tlio unx
ions sufferer from the dread kidney
disease. We therefore give hero an
Interview with a Chickaslm man:
"lining exposed to ail kinds of
weather and Jumping off and on the
wagon put my kidneys in a run down
condition" says Mr. Church. "My

Kidney I'llls advertised I used some

Would ho a fitting name for the Aetna Building and Loan plan for
savings. A small payment every month will in a few years yield a hand-
some return on the investment by reason of the high rate of dividends
earned by this great institution.
Let the Aetna people furnish you tlie cash with which to build a
modern bungalow or to repair your present homo.
In tlliese days of I.IrI and constantly increasing costs evfery home
