The first day of every year is particularly' set. apart as the
"open seasonl' for optimists and woe unto the pessimist who ri.ires
to mar Jhe pleasures of the occasion by doleful predictions ! . The
professional' optimist sees nothing but bright " skies while the
pessimist beholds only black clouds. As a 'matter of
fact ever since llie earth began to spin on its axis cadi succeeding
revolution has brought ils share of sunshine and shadow bright
days and gloomy days calm and storm and in all probability it
will be so till the clock of time runs down. I he optimist who can j
see no shadows ahead lias eyes equally as defective ns those of the'
pessimist who is positive that there will be no sunshine. . i
From all of which as we pursue our solemn meditations on I
this bright New Year's day endeavoring to strike a balance on the j
conflicting forecasts for llie coining twelve months and to form j
i-leiii- n nietiire ns niissi b e of what wil come to pass we conclude i

that it will neither be as good as the radical opl musts predict nor as
bud as the untntigiited' pessimists prophesy lint since we belong
to the optimistic school and since wc have made a profound study
of weather conditions in the past we (ire bound to believe that
there will be more bright days than dark days. Tt always lias
been so and you don't suppose that the "scheme of things entire"
is going lo be reversed do you? Decidedly it will not and there-
fore you will be laying up for yourself a lot of trouble which will
never' come if vou insist on falling in with the view of the misguided
irophels of 'despair.
This great country of ours and il is tlie best in the world.
4loii't forget that has been fortunate above all oilier lands in llie
'trying period through which we have been passing and from which
we are beginning to emerge. A world war which wiped nut millions
of workers and burned up billions of dollars worth of accumulated
wealth upset the entire economic structure of tlie world and it
cannot be righted in a day a year or perhaps a generation. In llie
joyous celebrations immediately following the cessation of hostili-
iie's we failed to realize that' the tragedy didn't end when the
sound of the guns died away. The gay parly went on and we en-
joyed for a lime a hectic sort of prosperity marked by high prices
i nd high wages and we were so busy that we didn't stop to think
that we would have to pay tlie fiddler. Hut pay day finally came
us it always does and then we began to realize tile whole world
has a huge bill to pay before the last chapter of the history of the
great war is written.
The party is over and we have made an important discovery:
w'e have learned that the laws underlying .business and industry
will operate whether we realize it or not and that the losses of vrav
can be replaced only by the same processes by which all this wealth j
was created originally by years of honest toil with hand and brain. ;
AVith the breaking of world markets of nil eoiniiioilities.'began the;
process of re-adjustment which is still going on. Now that we un-i
ilerstand what is happening and what it is all about it is possible;
for us to revise our thinking and our plans to meet the new eondi-
lions and this is what the business world is doing. Clear-beaded J
business men are not spilling any tears or wasting any energies
in worrying over the situation but are making their plans to do bus-
iness and reap profits under cliiinged conditions.
In this post-war period of re-adjiistnient and the recouping of
world losses capital and labor alike must- realize that they must
yield to obedience to economic law: there is no escape from it ex-
cept turmoil and confusion which is costly to all parties. Trices
of raw and manufactured products as well as wages must be ad-
justed on a basis that is fair and any unwijlingness to squarely
face and meet the demands of economic law can only serve to ag-
gravate conditions which all want relieved hindering the return of
the orderly prosperity which we desire. The patient business
is convalescent and it behooves all of us to join hands in aiding to-
ward complete recovery. Political nostrums will do no good but
if we set to work with willing hands and courageous hearts tack-
ling our problems as "comrades in the strife" there is good rea-
son to believe that the year just dawning will bring us enough pros-
perity to satisfy all our needs and carry us forward on the path of
progress. ' r
