A NABBOW ESCAPE.
Mrs. S. G. Wilson Tried to Fill a
Gaaoline Stove and a Fi.e
Resulted.
Mrs. Wilson wife of S. G. Wil-
sou. a well known retired basiuera
man and real estate dealer of this
city hsd a narrow escape from
death last Wednesday afternoon at
ber borne on Sixth street on Sooth
Hill wben she attempted to All
tbe feeder tank of a lighted gaso-
line Btove. She was painlaily
tbougb not seriously burned about
the face and arms and part of ber
clothing was burned from ber
body tboagh the fact that she wore
a worsted dress doubtless saved
her from s horrible death.
It was between 4 and S o'clock
in the afternoon wben Mrs. Wilson
tatted her preparations for sup
per. She bad lighted the gasoliue
stove wben she discovered that the
oii in the tank was running low.
Withont extinguishing the burner
she filled a meaaure with gasoline
and began to pour the oil into tbe
tank. In doing so she thinks she
accidentally spilt some of it on tbe
top of tbe stove for a moment
later there was a sudden puff and a
bliuding flash and the whole room
was in flames. Mrs. Wilson quick
ly sprang back from the burning
atove bat the iuflammable mater
ial of her apron bad already ignited
and but for her grest presence of
mind she would bave been burned
to death. She smothered the apron
in the folds of her worsted dress.
and was also assisted by visitors in
extinguishing the flames.
Meanwhile Mr. Wilson who was
coming from tbe barn saw tbe
flash of light and rea'ized what it
meant. When he reached the
kitchen tbe room was a mass of
Are the flames scorching a twelve
foot ceiling. After satisfying him
self tuat Mrs. Wilson was saf he
devoted his efforts to putting out
the fire which be succeeded In do
ing at tbe expense of bis eyebrows
part of his moustache and oonsid
erable hair and a large amount of
bed clothing. The damage to tbe
house was about $10 but tbe ex
perience is valued at several hun
dred.
Yesterday Mr. Wilson camj
down town and purchased a bran
new coal stove which will replace
the gasoline cooker in the kitchen.
No more escapes of that kind for
bim. Mrs. Wilson is recovering
rapidlv from the tfiVots of her ex-
perience and the boraB on ber
face and hands will soon heitl.
The remains of Mr. Lowell the

ment at his old home.
