BY PROBES
(By Clyde H. Tavenner.)
Washington Oct. 26. Tariff isn't
the only thing the republicans are
afraid of in the coming campaign.
There is another Item that is giving
them worry. They are wondering how
they are to give an answer to the
charges of corruption incompetency
and maladministration that have been
brought out and proven by the var-
ious democratic Investigating commit
tees.
Republican leaders realize that this
problem Is going to present exception
al difficulties by the fact that when
the democrats started investigating
they the republicans shouted In de.
rision of such tactics declaring there
was nothjng to investigate; that un-
der the republican rule the affairs of
government had been conducted In
only perfect Planner and that the
whole purpose of the democrats was
to make political thunder.
That th?re was really need of some
Investigating in and around Washing-
ton was amply proven before the
probes of republican rule had well be-
gun and despite all of the revelations
; rt'avagance and maladministra-
tion that have come. to light majiy
of the Investigating committees are
Just getting ready to go to work. So
far they have but scratched the sur-
face. The Moss committee brought to
light the shameful mannar In which
the plotters In the pure food bureau
had Btrlpped Dr. Wiley of all power
and made a farce of the law designed
to protect the public from the greed
of unscrupulous food dopers.
The Stanley committee learned that
the steel trust for year paid tremen-
dous profits on a capitalization repre-
sented largely by water and blue air
and that the trust gobbled up the
Tennessee Coal and Iron company. Its
principal rival with the aid and con-
nivance of a republican administra-
tion ostensibly to prevent a panic
but actually to stifle Its main com-
petitor. It was fur'' r brought out
that men were acting as counsel for
the steel truBt while receiving money
from the government as special "trust
busters."
The probe of the state department
revealed that money was expended
for one thing and charged to anoth-
er while the committee on expendi-
tures in the navy department discov-
ered that more than $3000000 worth
of supplies had been taken from the
Washington navy yard without an ac
counting and that the bookkeeping
system in use there is absolutely ri-
diculous. Thoaa nrt but a Of liiSTy H)U3
traiions thai could be given to show
the value of honest investigations.
More than a dozen other committees
have turned up equally important evi-
dence. .

The Quickest Way to Rest.
Do you know how to rest? A very
busy man I know takes 20 minutes
very day to lie flat on his back on
the floor to rest and relax. That is
very good but I have found an even
better way which is to lie fiat on the
floor with legs up to the knees rest-
ing on a chair. This changes the en-
tire circulation and Is the quickest
way to rest. Try It. When you lie
down to rest at tight and the mind
insists upon working try to telax
thoroughly. Turn the thought to the
weight of your body; think your
bands heavy; keep the thought on
the weight of your hands until the
nerves tingle as if the bands were
going to sleep. If you can feel that
tingling sensation you have shown
the power of relaxation of the hands.
Think different members of the body
heavy until you can let go. every
nerve as if the entire body were so
much Jelly ready to melt on the bed.
This requires practice but It pays
richly. To rost the eyes and make
