Her Quiet Ways

Hie host college prizes. Ills father
wtis more tlinn ready to start him In
business In n good way. And there
was Norma Waldron!
Succeeding ilie period of vacation
and festlvlly awarded hy his student
friends there had como a week spent
Bt linzehvood tlio palatial country
lioino of Iho W'aldrons. Ahout u se-
lected dozen were Invited. Norma and
her closest collect! girl friend's wero
the hostesses and from the start Leslie
had heen attracted hy Norma and at
tlio finish it was pretty generally he-
lleved (hat tliero would he a match.
Norma was a veritable madcap. It
never occurred to Leslie that Ids staid
omlnenlly conservative parents would
never receive as prospective daughter-In-hiw
a romp a mere butterfly of
flaslilness folly and mischief. Tho
practical phase of marriage ho had
neer paused to consider. It was tlio
lost evening of his visit when ho man-
ni;ed to get Norma alone to himself.
"Norma" he said "there Is some-
Ihlng 1 must tell you before we part."
She slipped from his caress and
moved away witli tantalizing swift-
ness and grace.
"Don't spoil It all I" fdia responded.
"Walt till we meet again."
"But when?" he remonstrated.
1 "Very soon I promise It. Then you
shall tell me all your troubles."
"Troubles ! Von mean the cause
of my alternate delirious hopes and
Miickest despair 1"
"Listen they are coming. They
will be here In n few moments. Kulli
(Hidden lias Invited mo to spend n
week at Oakhurst. You know her
brother Percy well. I will so arrange
It that you too shall be there during
my stay. Is not that enough to sus-
tain your hopes anil banish your
despair my loyal and trusted cheva-
lier?" And then she Hilled away n daz-
zling sprite and Leslie felt as though
the rarest gifts of the gods were his
of n verity. Oh ! ho was sure he had
found unending happiness anil bo
was still more certain of It when Ter-
ry (Hidden met him one day and said
to him :
"This next week of yours belongs
to my sister Ruth and Norma Wttl-
(lron. Of course we can count on you"
and Leslie Hushed slightly at the suro
Intimation that his friend was owaro
of his attachment for Norma. "You
sew Norma is so used to excitement
and variety and lots of company that
It would he pretty dull for her down
nt Oakhurst. My sister Is tlio dear-
est loveliest being In tlio world but
her quiet ways are In very strong con-
trast to the Hashing dashing methods
of our charming Norma."
The thought of meeting Norma nnd
of having her all to himself greatly
relieved Leslie. During that Interven-
ing week however he had heen n
good deal disturbed with rumors that
his capricious ladylove was actios
the flirt ami coiiudie. There was a
Ihishy stranger who was said to bu
paying her unusual ntlenllon.
Leslie knew I'ei-ey (Hidden well
his sister llulh only slightly. When
he reached (lakhurst and was driven
along lis pii"t si reds It seemed good
to him to experience a certain restful
calm after the arduous social activity
that hail become continuous nnd
wearisome. Somehow the old-fashioned
home of the (Hlildelis presented
n haven of rest fulness. There was
a severe disappointment at the start
however.
"Sorry Leslie" Percy (Hidden told
him "lint Norma Is not coming until
next week seme important engage-
ments Is her plea. Do you think y in

dull routine?"
"(live me a hummock and a hook
and I'll be tho very peacefulest being
In the world Percy" declared Leslie.
A grand old placo It was Indeed
and within twenty-four hours It
seemed as though a salutary spell was
cast over the volatile spirits of tho
guest. He had always known that
Ituth with her quiet ways was a
strong contrast to Norma but now
as those quiet ways accorded with the
sweet soothing poacof illness of her
environment Leslie began to take an
Interest In her that absorbed him.
(iracious gentle almost queenly In
her quiet girlish dignity when ho was
not in her presence a strango new In-
fluence seemed to havo come Into his
existence.
What was It now surroundings tho
fever of excitement subdued by cnlin
and wholesome environment Or was
It an uprising of genuine love quench-
ing the lltfu! flash of fancy? Leslie
Kecmed to have entered upon a new
life. The house Its occupants all na-
ture appeared In harmony complete
with rational enjoyment and Leslie
was sorry when that week neured Its

lie was uneasy. He was almost
I ptcd to leave Oakhurst not car-
ing to again meet the old Idol of his
beams. Then opening a newspaper
:hat bad just come by mall he read
jn account of the elopement of Norma
Wnldron with the man who had onco
i roused his jealousy.
Ills spirits were rapt nnd Joyous as
u realized the news lie was free

o woo and win the woman whose loss
ivolild have shadowed all his life.
