Court House Scenery
Conducive to Oratory
According to Attorney Barefoot one
of the best known orators in the legal
profession in this section of Oklahoma
stage settings are necessary adjuncts
when one would unburden his system
ot the pent-up floods of eloquence and
snatch oratorical garlands from the
brows of the shades of Webster and
of Choate.
Mr. Barefoot says that Romeo might
as well seek to woo Juliet upon a stage
with a kitchen sink and a loaded
dothes horse in the background as for
a lawyen to endeavor to impress the
minds of a jury with his forensic pow-
ers with inappropriate scenery con-
fronting him and meeting his gaze and
holding his attention while the burn-
ing words of liberty or prison cell for
his client are pdfirlng. like floods ot
molten lava from his lips.
Pointing to the: ''scenery'' immedi-
ately in the rear of the Jury box in the
district court room Mr. Barefoot
called attention to the weird drawings
and bas-relief effects which had been
brought out by the gyrations of the
mason's trowel. He called attention
to the fantastic emblems which the
seeping waters had traced upon the
kalsomine and left like the Spenserian
sample of old a handwriting on the
wall. He pointed to the masterly maif
ner in which the tin wash pans filled
r. ith sawdust for the expectoratory ex-
ercises of the jurors reposed in well
ordered disorder in front ot and be
neath and beside each juror's chair; he
showed to his on-looking auditoi- the
beauteous curves and undulations of
section on section of stovepipe which
wandered across the face of the ceil-
ing like unto the crooks and turns aiiii
low joints and high centers of the
Frisco traversing the fertile fields of
Grady county and exclaimed with
voice thrilling and pulsing and sob-
bing with a heartfelt emotion "Who
can wonder that the attorneys of
Crady county the members of the
(irady county bar are known far and
near for the class the high class of
their oratory? Why given such scen-
ery as this surrounded with such awe-
some granduer even Demiuthenese
would have made a greater word archi-
tect than -history shows him to have
been. Oaze upon this stage setting
and think upon it and wonder then
if you can upon the sublimity of the
oratory of f'hickasha lawyers.''
