Hun Fiai.ciKco April 18.--Five years
ago today the newspapers of t lie world
were Informing their shocked and hor-
rified readers that Sun Francisco wan
utterly destroyed annihilated wiped
olf the mail. What the earthquake
had eommendeed the terrible conflug-
in Moil that swept over the city threat-
ened to finish and to the onlookers It
Heemed that nothing was to be left of
the- doomed city but ii collection of
first class ruins.
Within the brief space of five years
San Francisco lias fully demonstrated
(hat the i'henlx the fabled bird that
was burned and arose from its ashes
hurt nothing on this city. Ambitious
rival municipalities along the Pacific
coast which had reckoned San Fran
cisco as in the ltabyion and ivmevan
class reckoned without the indi mit-
able spirit that lias rebuilt a bigger
and better 'Frisco on the ruins that
were considered after the fire as be-
ing fit only for the habitation of hoot-
owls. Today the people of the Golden
('ate city are celebrating the anniver-
sary by preparing for the bigget in-
ternational exposition in the world's
history. Moreover the recently strick-
en city is not as'rlr.g for the assistance
of Uncle Sam. The business men of
Hie city subscribed $7"()()fi0 before it
had been decided where the Panama
exposition was to be held and now
that the fair Is tin assured fact there
will be no lack of funds to carry the
project to a glorious completion. San
Francisco is anxious to show Uiu
world how she has come up out of the
ashes of her destructive fire and the
commercial interests are willing to
pay big for the privilege.
While many of the "shacks" and
cheap frame temporary buildings that
were put. up after the fire have not
yet been replaced it is expected that
all of them will have been torn down
by the time the exposition opens in
1915 The work of rebuilding the city
i.j now somewhat retarded by the scar-
city of labor but as rapidly as the con-
tractors can hatidje the jobs the
"shacks" are giving way to handsome
structures of steel brick and Stone. In
the business district proper class A
buildings that is of fireproof steel
and stone construction predomi-
nate. Insurance experts believe that
a repetition of the disasterous fire of
five years ago would now be almost
impossible.
In the heart of the city real estate
values are higher than before the fire
atid every day adds to (lie value of
the property. Those who despaired of J
the future of the city and sold their !
holdings for a song aided in the en-
richment of many men of faith and
good judgment who have become
wealthy through their investments. '
for they are made by dependable people people who
make nothing but the best and on every shoe is
stamped the style and individuality of the old shoe
houses. Style and wear are more pronounced in our
line this Spring than ever and the smallest as well ;as
the largest foot can be properly fitted out of this
immense stock.

Well

Manager Lindsay has been success-
ful in securing what he believes to be
a team that will make Interesting op-
ponents for the Chickasha bunch.
They come touted as being an all-star
c;;st and one strong In their belief
that they will break Chickasha's "win-
ning streak."
This aggregation is none less than
the Morris team in the Oklahoma City
league. They will doubtless pick the
cream of the city league players; but
they can take a tip from Chickasha's
famlom and expect to go home Sun-
day night with the Indian sign tacked
on them in a conspicuous place.
. Outfielder Owens he who starred
in a portion of last Sunday's game w ill
be a fixture with the Chickasha team
lie promises to be one of the best and
most popular men on the team. Also
it Is repoted that "Lasses" Hitchcock
will he on the job Sunday is being Im-
possible for him to report last Sunday.
