QUEEN OF THE WASHITA
Much in Evidence Jim Pettyjohn
not yet Found.
St Louis Sept. 6 1904 Petty-
john's private car left Chickasha
"Queen of the Washita" Saturday
noon and with about five hundred
Oklahomans in the chair cars
reached Kansas City Sunday morn-
ing at six-thirty and tarried six
minutes for break fest which few
got and we were soon flying across
old Missouri at the rate of seven
miles per hour. The engine and
train were heavy and the track
new.wet and slippery. Hopes of
breakfast relapsed into "innocuous
de suetuele" and we trusted for an
early dinner. At one o'clock we
stopped at a little depot and the Ok-
lahomans fell off Hke turtles off a
log and raided a little lunch room.
There were a hundred volunteer
clerks and in the twinkling of an
eye that little fellow was out of
business. Not a sardine or cracker
or crumb of cheese nor bottle of
pepper sauce nor a box of axle
grease was left. All abroad was
called and in the mad scramble Mr.
F.dger lost his glasses Maxey his

crutch and an old man stumped his
toe and lost coffee cup and all after
which the train having pulled up a
length stood for half an hour.
At 3:30 sharp we'reached Kldoii
where K. M. Duncan had kindly
and thoughtfully ordered two hun-
dred dinners and the way we got
outside of them wasn't slow.
Mr. Duncan did all in his power
to make the trip pleasant for us ev-
en taking off our banners and help-
ing carry the big watermelon a
quarter of a mile at midnight at St.
Louis and we owe him an eternal
debt of gratitude for the cheerful
way he endured our roasting.
Our banners were read by every
body and the small boys in partic-
ular at every station and we were
almost thrown out of our berths at
midnight by boys yelling "Chicka-
sha." The big watermelon was
the admired of all admirers and no-
where so mu(;fi as in the World's
Fair ground as Mr. Gillett of
the horticultural building Indian
territory exhibit and I carried the
melon in a large basket into the
ground and to the Intiamural car.
Oklahoma had the largest melon
from Mangum with certified weight
of 91- pounds. Oklahoma has a
paper on its melon challenging the
world to beat their melon in an
honest competition. Our melon is
now just act oss the aisle from theirs
and is plainly larger though both
have lost weight. The twin terri-
tories have s the rest of the world
plainly beajteu by about 50 per
cent. Texas and Virginia and sev-
eral other states have melons.
Our cotton hung on the side of
the car and had all the bolls pulled
off in Missouri.
Yesterday morning Pettyjohn sat
in front of the hotel with a far-away
look and a cadaverous .smile
for a long time and rising said
something about a glass of beer.
He has not been seen since. I am
going to the police station this
morning to inquire. Home and
Maxey in fact all of them are now
lost and are believed to be walk-
ing heme to be sure of getting in
before their tickets expire. A. S.
GlLKEY.
A very enjoyable reception was
given at the Presbyterian church
last evening in honor of the new
pastor Rev. Mr. Fait. The pastor
made a short address and Miss Im-
hoff sang a very beautiful solo. Ice
cream and cake were served. The
new pastor has made a very favor-
able impression.
