into tlio printers hands so that it
could be syndicated by the newspapers.
The liev Dr. Manihter was u oopu-
lar preacher and his famo fnnned ju-
dlcious'y by his ndvoi Using agent
had penetrated to the uttermost isles.
He wns a severe looking man with
n heavy cast of countenance well-befitting
so solemn and serious nn office
as that of devil-drl-er.
Tim wholo frowning nspect of" hln
countennnefi Roemed. in fact to bo
meant as n dlreit and deliberate men-
nco to the evil one announcing that
hero was a man who would stop at
nothing till he hud driven his sinister
highness back to his own gloomy do-
mains. Moreover from the sensual mouth
and coarse lips of tho dlvino it was
evident that n potent faith and u rigid
self restraint had long been neoded to
make him so persistent and deliberate
nn enemy of the dovil:
Tho preacher luld the card in his
hand n minute looking at it carefully
ps If in somo doubt concerning what
ho saw upon it. Then 1 dropped it
on ills desk and told tho servant to
show ills callc. In.
There entered the 100m in respond
to this order a young g.rl some
twenty years of age fashionably
attired ami wonderfully beautiful.
"Corlsnndel How is this?" ex-
claimed tho preacher rising to greet
her "I thought you were In Italy.
Sit down my child. This Is a greut
surprise."
The charming vision ensconced Itself
comfortably in an oasy-clmir and two
brown eyes liquid with tenderness or
emotion beamed upon the minister.
'You urn looking cry well indeed.
Gorlsnnde" hn nddod contemplating
his vls-a-vis with a much less frown-
ing visage than ho had presented to
the cloven-hoofed monster.
"I feel as well as one could expect
to do under tho elrcumstancos" an-
swered tho girl quietly.
Tho ministor who had turned his
eyes downward did not look at tho
speaker when slio replied and there
wnssllenco in the library for a few
lmvucnts.
Then he said as it recovering tho
thread of his thoughts after having
wandered frotfully away from lds
Mibjec :
"And what do you intend to do
now. Corisande?"
"What!"
The answer was almost instantane
ous and tho tone wjw almost Indescrib-
able. A volume witli all its consum-
mate analysis anil detail could not
have explained more decisively the se-
cret of Corlsando's life.
'1 he prenoher recoiled as if stricken
nnd a look of dated honor and help-
lessness came into hi face as hegaed
cpiusllonlngly into that of the girl
which had grown htony and rigid
Biiii e she had spoken.
"Coiisande " said the preacher be-
seechingly "will you not be morcl-
fur.'" A snillo of scorn wreathed the lips
of tho beautiful girl as shu answered
slow ly and careXully
"There nro some things which can-
not bo undone Dr. Manlstor and this
is one of them I would not huo
come to you now but that I read ouu

"Corisande you do not mean "
The picacherdid not complete his
sentence.
"Do you not know thit all things
ultimately find their level in the euou-
rimy of natuio?" replied thu girl sol-
eiiiiilj nil trace of emotion having
vanished from her tones
"Impossible" ro plied the preacher
vehemently "A girl with your train-
ing vour Instincts would never de-
scend to that"
"Have you novor preached to us.
when I was one of those wiio sat and
listened to your words as tlioso of ono
mspitcd by heaven of the fatal in-
lltiunce of tho llrst stop?" nuswored
the girl w th the calmness of one who
fueling that the lost estige of hope
has departed faces an untoward fatu
with tiie fearlessness of an utter de-
spair. "Hut I understood" suul ' the
preacher suddenly icgain'iig his self-
posOAlou through the liilliieuce of a
hopeful thought "Hint jou wen per
suing vour studies 111 Itome nnd that
you intended to go' married this fall
to the man whom you admit tod t me
had w 011 your heart "
I he girl listened '.- these words as
mechanically as though she had antici
pated them her large thoughtful eyes
fiod upon the speaker with an ex-
pression of contemptuous forbearance
and her answer evidently prepared
when the time should come for her to
break.
After she had concluded she leplied
In a tool steady voice in which there
was a tonroely perceptible undertone
of bitterness:
"Yes; 1 loved Arthur Maynard as
det-plv as a woman could love I would
sacrifice everything to marry him even
now- if my conscience would permit of
such a dastardly piece of deception
but I have uot yet reached that depth
of baseness that I would dureive a
true aud honorable nature nor could
you dar to iolate your taored trust
by uniti if iiiiu at the altar to one you
knew 11 u I so basely de eived him "
The perapirutinn stood in huge
beads upon the preacher's forehead
but he did not answer one word.
"As 1 cannot deceive Arthur May-
nard" continued the woman in earn-
est tones "so it is with regard to the
rest of tlio worid If I live among
