AGRICULTURE IN THE UNITED STATES.
The total nuinher of farmers in the country shows a .slight in-
crease over the nuniher reported in VH0 hut 'he relative nuinher
tdiows a decrease. Thus while the rural poj illation was U) per
cent of the whole in I'KX. anil ahoiit 55 per cent in 1010 in l'2U
it was only 4S.6 per cent. The uitmher actually living on farms
was niuch less. hecausp the census classes as rural all people in
towns of less than 2.500. says the Houston Post.
Although the farmer show a relative decrease in nunihets each
year production on the farms has not shown a corresponding de-
fline owing to the introduction of iihor saving machinery on the
farms. Machines now do the work of many hands and they
have heen factors fn depleating the ranks of the farms. Were the
same methods used in fanning that were in vogue. 5U years ago
it would require several times as many producers of food as there
llow are to feed the people of the country.
Nevertheless the country is showing the effects of lopsided
development. The proportion hctween those who produce on the
farms and those who live in towns and cities and are dependent
on the farmers for food is untrue. The disposition is hecoiuing
more marked as immigrants pour in and fewer improvements are
made in lahor saving machinery.
The cost of living will he high as long as this disproportion
exists. The food supply will continue to become relatively smaller
just as it has in European countries where agriculture has heen
overshadowed hy other industries. The danger of actual food
shortage in this country may he too far in the future to cause
much concern now hut" if we. are to have living costs at reason-
able figure again something will have to he done to secure a
better balance between the producers and the consumers of food.

' When the worms are scarce what does a lien do? Does she
stop scratching? She does not. A lot of husiness men have
been showing less sense than a hen since orders became scarce.
They have laid off salesmen; they have stopped or reduced then-
advertising ; they have simply resigned themselves to nudum and.
of course to pessimism. If a hen knows enough to scratch all
the harder when the worms are scarce surely business men. who
are supposed to possess a moderate amount of brains ought to
have gumption enough to scratch all the harder for business.
