Major Neal is now at the agency en-
deavoring to secure an enrollment of
the Klokapoos. He has experienced
considerable dllllculty in this and
particularly from Chief Waw-pah-mah-shah-wa
nud his band. The old chief
lb blind and entertains the Indian's
hereditary antipathy to the white
race. At a council meeting the other
day he made a llery speech in the
course of which he said his people
held their laud by common and hon-
orable agreement with the white
man and which treaty said in the
white man's own tongue that they
(the Kickupoos) should hold this land
'as long as grass grows and water
ruus." Thut their dead were buried
there tho limit was very dear to them
that it had been sold by fraud and
without their consent und that lie
and his people would never taltu their
allotments or draw any per capita
evjn though tho Oreat I'at'icr should
"grind them to powder."
Me then indignantly drew his
blanket around him and left the coun-
cil followed by his band to the num-
ber of about 70.
Oe-quo-nuh-ko-soe on the other
hand represents the pr .jjrossive fac-
tion and he with his lnud numbering
more than fifty have already suc-
cumbed to tho arguments of Major
Neal and signed the roll for their
lands
So better man than the major could
have been nmoug them siuce the
Kleknpoos have known him for many
years knows their woys well und en-
joys their confidence as much as any
white man can.

JOHN FOX ESCAPES FROM THE
COUNTY JAIL.
Hi- Willi Micro l-rlnouor Mllpn Out tin-

Ilia Km'upr.
It develops that the two men who
escaped from the county jail Monduy
night mention of which wns made In
yesterday's Lkaiu:i: were two very
bad men.
Ouo was no other than John Fox
the man adjudged insane in district
court on hntun'ay last The other
was a negro with many aliases who
was serving a term Jfor larceny. The
negro's right name is said to be Mote
l-.yle. He is a well-known character
about town and has a faculty for get-
ting into trouble.
On Saturday Fox was nrraiirncd in
district court for horse stealing. Ills
queer actions caused comment and he
was adjudged insane. Sheriff Painter
had perfected all arrangements to
take Fox to the Jacksonville 111. asy-
lum this week.
The jail delivery occurred about S-30
o'clock Monday evening. Turnkey
Jackson had entered tho jail with
food for the prisoners and loft the
lock hanging loose in the staple. Fcx
and Lylo were standing near tho door
and while Jackson's back was turned
they lifted tho lock fnm the staple
with a piece of bent wire. Hastily
opening the door thoy bounded over
Jackson and out the door (lulning
the front corridor both plunged
through a window carrying the sash
with them. Strangely none of the
other prisoners attempted to escape
although It would have been nn easy
matter to overpower the turnkey.
Theto is yet no elew to the escaped
jail birds. Since the delivery it is
current belief that Fox is of sound
mind and only feigned insanity while
in court.
I'litf'to TiiIUh.
Concerning the recent jail delivery
A. Potete for quite a whi'e guard
there says: "There was only one
lock on tho jail when it should have
had sixteen. That lo.de was on tho
outside door 'lhercwasno lojl: of
any kind on any of the cells. These
wero all destroyed at the time of the
firo in the old county jail n.id have
never been replaced.
The door where the prisoners es-
caped had nothing but u bar on the
inside for them lo sliJe back. There
was no lojk and w.13 none on tho out-
side door where they went out.
"I want to say further that tho
jailer was In the Imildiiijr ut tho thno
tho prisoners escaped to my certain
knowledge."
The escaped prisoners were up for
horso stealing ami wero desperate
characters.
