"EVERYWOMAN"
To be perfectly candid we don't
l.now what the dramatic critics who
uio paid so much per to pick fjawn
with plays and players have said
about "Everywoman" the Henry W.
Savage production that has been
drawing immense crowds from one
end of the country to the other for
five years and is still packing thea-
tres as it did here last night. Per-
hfips the professional critics may have
foui.d fault with It we cannot say-
but this Is one time when we throw
in with our genial friend the press
agent pronouncing the piece precise
ly what It Is said to be a "tremendous
' dramatic spectacle the wonder play
that has everything opera drama
musical comedy" and "then some."
All of the superlatives which the
press agent is wont to spread on might
be applied to the play and the-players
who were seen at the Sugg last night
without doing violence to truth. The
author of the piece Walter Brown
lias drawn upon his resources for an
amazing array of dramatic elements
from the days of the old morality
Iilays to the up-to-the-minute on
Uroadway and has put his materials
together in a way that pleases every
variety of taste for entertainment and
at the same time conveys in a way
t.triking and most unusual ethical In-
struction that is fundamentally sound.
Abstract virtues are personified and
in the portrayal of the pilgrimage of
"Everywoman" in quest of "King
I.ove" there is a play within a play
while throughout the piece one feels
that potentially at least it is true.
The comedy is that which we see in
real life not the trumped up kind
while nobody questions the genuine-
ness of the soul-tragedy which "Every
woman" experiences.
With beautiful music written by
George W. Chadwick staged under
the direction of George Marionf who
luis produced some spectacular ef-
fects of surpassing splendor "Every-
woman" appealing as it does to the
ear the eye the mind and heart must
be recognized as one of the most meri-
torious dramatic offerings of recent
years.
In the title role Edna Porter perfect-
ly suited to the part calm or intensely
emotional as occasion demands cap-
tivates the audience from the start.
As "Youth" nazal O'Brien shows tho
skill and talent of a real artist and
George Snydonham as "Nobody" one
of the most peculiar characters ever
created by a playwright is an exceed-
ingly Impressive and effective actor.
The entire cast deserves the most gen-
erous praise.
The seating capacity of the Sugg
was inadequate to accommodate the
crowd many extra chairs being placed
lu the theater.

Washington March 1. Dr. Walter
F. Rittman scientist in the U. S. Eu-
reau of Mines has given to the United
States and the world a practical plan
lor trebling the amount of gasoline
that may be produced from crude oil.
science chemistry calculus and phys
ics helped him make the discovery
that autoists and others will watch
closely.
Dr. Rittman's discovery has now en
listed the aid of Henry Ford manu
facturer Detroit Michigan who plans
to do all he can to make this discov
ery a real wallop at the well known
octopus.
"Because I had a strong body train-
ed to endure long hard Btrains I was
able to work thirty-six hours at a
stretch when necessary" Prof. Ritt-
Hian said. "I attribute my success to
a rtrnng physique acquired in footbal.
battles and otbjr forms of college ath-
letics. "My processes were not over-night
inspirations. They are the result of
ftraight scientific research involving
the U8e of calculus physics and chem-
istry. When in the midst of an exne-
riinont one needs physical strength."
Thirty-seven hours of work without
food sleep or rest was not uncommon
for Dr. Rittman. -
In addition to enabling independent
oil operators to secure three times the
iimount of gasoline from crude oil
that was possible under old systems.
Dr. Rittmin's discovery will greatly
increase the production of tuluol and
benzol two important bases for the
mnnufacture of high explosives and
dyestiiffs.
Secretary of the Interior Lane has
consented to a plan to have Prof.
Kitlman supervise installation of the
necessary plant and machinery requir-
ed in the production of gasoline
tuluol and benzol at plants of some
of the leading oil and powder factories
in this country.
NEW ZEPPS ARE
LONG AND SLENDER
By United Press.
Amsterdam March 28. The Zeppe-
lin has been vastly Improved lately.
There is no doubt that the Germans
take it very seriously as a fighting
machine. Still greater aerial activity
on their part may be executed soon.
The prediction is that of a neutral
recently arrived from Germany wnero
he had an opportunity to see and hear
much concerning the Kaiser's plans
lor air raiding but whose name for
obvious reasons cannot be published.
According to his account the new
est Zeppelin is much longer and nar-
rower than its predecessors the lat-
ent form having proved more readily
manageable in heavy weather. The
gondolas hang much deeper than for
merly and a bridge connects them.
Both gondolas and the bridge are met
al plated in the hope that they may
prove bullet-proof.
Kich new Zepplin carries about ten
machine guns and two or three small
cannon. Formerly the cannon were
mounted on special platforms. It was
found however that these were often
hit diminishing the craft's efficiency;
so at present both machine guns and
cannon are inside the gondolas pro
tected by thick steel plates.
Several new bomb-throwing devices
have been adopted.' An equipment
has also been provided for pouring out
poisonous gases upon enemies.
The improved type of air ship is
built almost entirely of a combination
of aluminum and steel; the rudders
have been much simplified and the
motors are far more powerful than the
older ones.
The Friedrichshafen plant has been
increased fully 00 times in size and
the number of employes has been mul-
tiplied by at least twenty. By April
the Hermans expect to be able to send
three Zeppelins to the front weekly.
The Parseval and Schutte-Lanz fac-
tories are said also to have increased
their output at least ten times.
In many German quarters the belief
i3 said to be that air craft will prov-3
the war's deciding factor.

CLAIM FOOD RIOTS
DUE TO FAVORITISM
.nt
By United Press. '
Rotterdam March- 21. Favoritism
lr the distribution of foodstuffs is de-
clared on German authority to have
had more to do with recent disorders
in the Fatherland than any actual
shortage. The accusation is not mado
alone by radical publications like Vor-
waerts. The Kreuzzeitung of tho
military press discussing the situa-
tion at Dresden relates the following:
"It appears that the market author-
ties in that town have for months past
been doing a thriving trade in corner-
ii.g vegetables and cereals which were
intended by the municipality to be dis-
tributed at a nominal charge among
the poor. Before long proof was
forthcoming that the names of cus-
toms and town hall officials whole-
pale business firms and first class
boarding houses were careful!;" coted
in the market authorities' books.
These favored customers were sup-
plied secretly with all the article
they needed at prices only slightly in
excess of those fixed as payable by
the poor.
'"I h; consequence was that on
r-cores of occasions hundreds of poor
women after standing for hours iu
front of the market stalls pushing and
trampling one another and tearing one
another's clothes of fthcir backs in
their struggles to obtain the desired
food were sent away either empty-
handed or ijiveu a paltrv half pound
of peas or beans while well-paid offi-
cials or rich merchants ware supplied
j w ith 20 pounds at a time delivered
free at their houses."
