with friends and relatives in Sherman
Van Alstyne Denison ana other Texas
cities.' Mr. Newman reports having
tpent a most agreeable time while
away from Chlckaeha but says that
while the sections of Texas he visited
are among the best in the great Lone
Star state he finds conditions not
nearly so good as they are in this sec-
tion of Oklahoma.

Trend of Trading Yesterday.
CHICAGO' Nov. 18. Unsettled
weather and the fact that receipts in
the northwest were smaller tended
Thursday to strengthen the price of
wheat. Assertions that steamship
rates to Great Britain had become a
little easier helped also to some extent
to encourage the bullB. On the other
hand lower quotations from Liverpool
acted as a check on the buying side
here. ' After opening l-4c to J-8c off
to 5-8c up with December at $1.03 1-4
to $1.05 3-8 and May at $l.or.V4 to $1.03
7-S the market scored moderate gains
all around.
Corn hardened in value owing to un
favorable weather for curing and ship-
ping. Opening prices which ranged
from l-8c decline to 3-8c advance were
followed by a slight sag and then a
general upturn.
New York Cotton.
NEW YORK Nov. 18 The cotton
market opened steady Thursday! at a
decline of 1 to 5 points in response to
disappointing cables. There was some
Liverpool selling here particularly of
July while there was some further
Wall street selling but offerings were
not heavy and the market soon stead-
ied on scattered covering and trade
buying. Talk of small ginning returns
and the continued absence of spot
pressure probably encouraged reaction-
ary sentiment after the recent sharp
decline and after selling at 11.60c on
the call. January rallied to 11.70c
while March advanced from 11.85c to
11.96c or about five points over last
night's closing figures.

As He Understood It.
A Bible teacher among the south-
ern blacks desirous of waking the
dormant powers of a scholar asked
the question: ' "What are we taught
by the historic incident of Jacob
wrestling with the angel?" The cau-
tious reply came: "Dunno 'zactly but
