BRYAN'S REPLY TO ROOSEVELT.
In bis reply to Mr. Roosevelt's lsat
letter Mr. Bryan says in part:
"You quoted at length from a speech
made by Governor Hughes In which
ho ridicules one of your anti trust rem-
eJies. Is this the same Governor
Hughes who was counted as one of
the "allies" who endeavored to defeat
Mr. Taft when as you insisted Mr.
Tnll represented the "reformers" of
your party and his .opponent? the reac-
tionary element? Did not Go.eruor

uous Jn their connection with the law-
defying corporations You are cer-
tainly aware of the fact th".t In the
statement filed by George R. Sheldon
Uieu treasurer of the Republican Mate
committee two years ago after Mr.
Hughes' election it appears that the
following contributions were made to
the campaign fund: J. V. Morgan $20-
000; John D. Rockefeller 5000; An
drew Carnegie $3000; Charles M.
Schwab $2000; John V. Gutes 2000;
W. E. Corey $2000; W. Nelson Crom-
well $1000; W. F. Havemeyer $8000;
13. M Duke $3000. Several of these
are men known to be officially con-
nected with the trusts.
"Would the fact tnat these gentle-
men contributed to Ms campaign fund
tend to strengthen or lessen his testi-
mony regarding our anti trust plank?
"You cannot have failed to notice i

Referring to the lust part of the
sentence I might doubt your ability to
act as an expert as to panic pre-

no law-defying corporation has reason
to fear the direct effect of the anti-

me to suggest that your testimony on
this subject la not conclusive. You

terest in the election must be taken
Into consideration on weighing your
testimony. There is better evidence.

cabinet called in for consultation evi-
dently did not notice it. I staled that
we had not knowlng'y received a dol
lar from any official connected with a
corporation known as a trust and that
any money so received would be re-
turned as soon as we received knowl-
edge of the fact. 1 now remind you
that your convention deliberately re-
jected by a vote of 9 to 1 the plank
favoring publicity as to campaign con-
tributions. .:r. Taft has repudiated
the action of the convention and re-
buked the memLers of the convention
by declaring himself in for of a pub-
licity law but he favors publicity after
the election while we favor publicity
before tin election. Which do you re-
gard as the better plan to let the peo-
ple know before the election what In-
fluences are at work or to let them
know after the election?
"Are you willing to say that any
public Interest was served In 1904 by
cJucealing until after the election the
contributions niadu ' the Republican
campaign fund by Mr. Ilarrimdii and
those collected by him from others?
"Are you willing to say that the pub-
lication after elections then made
would have no effect on the election?
As I have said we will publish the
names of contributors above $100. Will
you ask your national committee to
publish before the election the contri-
butions above $100? Or if you regard
this as too small the contributions
of above $1000 or it this is also too
small the contributions above $10000?
If in t what reason can you give to the
public why our willingness to let the
country know the sources from which
we secure contributions raises a pre-
sumption in our favor that must be
overcome before you can ask the peo-
ple to accept your statement that the
law-defying corporations have more
to rear from Republican success than
from a. Democratic victory?"
same purposes that pay me larger pro-
fit but this remedy is so sure to ef-
fect a cure and my customer so cer-
tain to appreciate my recommending
It to him that I give it the prefer-
ence." For sale by all druggists.
