Our Liberty Bell
Was cast in the year 1752 and. was hung in.tl.ic old Stale House in Phila-
delphia which was then the Capital of the Colonies and bears 'the in-
scription "Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land and unto all the inhabi-
tants thereof." It was cracked at its first ringing and recast in 1753.
When on July 4th. 1 77fv our DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE-
was written it bad been agreed that as soon as the Declaration was. signed
;md adopted the old bell-man . should ring .Hie LIBERTY BELL in order
that the great throng of people on the outside might know. Thn old bell-
man had taken his place in the tower with the rope in his hands and when
bis grandson who was to give him the signal cried" "Ring Grandpa Rung
for Liberty"' the old man rang the news then spread by messengers to the
remotest end of the colonies. The youngsters 'lighted fires cannons blazed
and everywhere' the people men women and. cihldren alike tried in evcrv
way to show their j'ov that they .were' all to stand together shoulder to
shoulder a FREE NATION. . . :
"The LIBERTY BELL was cracked a second time while tolling on the
funeral day of John Marshall.. July 8th. 1835. The LFBERTY BELL is
now on exhibition in Independence Hall Philadelphia. '
