Many Companies Will be Unable to
Recover From the Damage

Beaumont Tex. April 1C. lre bo-
ginning at 4 a ra. destroyed all but
23 of the 175 rigs and derricks In the
Hogg-Swayne tract on Spindle Top.
It Is tha most disastrous fire on the
Mil alnco that of last September.
The damage la estimated at from
$800000 to $1000000. The flro start-
ed from a lantorn at tho Caldwell Oil
company's .well. Tho fly wheel of
an engine struck a lantern and Ignit-
ed tho derrick and tho flames sptead
with tho utmost rapidity three blocks
numbers 36 37 and 38 being In ashes
In two hours. No effort was made to
extinguish tho flro for It was Im-
possible to got wlthli. a hundred feet
of the flames o one was Injured. It
Is estimated that two-thhds of tho
companies In the burned district will
bo unablo to recover from the dam-
age done by the fire.

The committee appointed by Gov-
ernor Ferguson to solicit subscrip-
tions for defraying tho expenses of a
battalion of the Oklahoma National
Guard to the dedication exercises at
St. Louis held a meeting in Oklahoma
City yesterday. J

taw railroad company to recover $2-
