Men Working In Stornnc Under j-l'lta
l.nr II to SufiilitirlcActil
rumen.
Calculated to nrouio wonder nnd
perhaps '.xeito tho eurloslty of the
medical nnd dontnl professions wore
it generally kuoun is the fact that
the teeth of the men uho hnudle the
storngo batteries of tho Thirty-
fourth street crosstown ears rot
from the effects of tho neld fumes
which arise from the batteries ns
Ihey ure charged while apparently
no other HI effects aro felt says tha
New York Tribune.
Twche men work in the .wo pits
at tho power house in West Forty-
second street in which the storage
batteries are taken from the cars
recharged and restored to the cars.
The pits are situated between the
tracks near the doors nt each end
of the building through which tho
cars enter nnd dopart. Each pit has
two openings just Inrgo enough to
permit batteries to be lowered from
nnd rnlcd to the cars through them.
s the cars are stopped orer the
openings which nrr exactly the
shape of the batteries tho rectangu-
lar boxes their power having been
consumed nre released from tho fas-
tenings which clutch them to tho
undcrhody of the cnr. Thor fall
through the opening into a frame-
work traveling on .1 railway in the
pit nnd nre guided down to the floor
of the crane. This powerful machine
also carries a freshly charged bat-
tery and when the powerless ono has
been lowered the fresh one is hoisted
Into plnco In the same mnnuor an
automatic clutch holding it in place
undor the car.
The batteries are charged for one
two or three trips. When the num-
ber of trips made by each cor in tho
course of n day Is considered it is
apparent that tho batteries arc re-
charged mnny timed even in 13
hours. Sulphuric acid and water
form the liquid proportions of these
batteries and when they are charged
with an electric current they exhale
clouds of apor or fumea which are
stiotfgly Impregnated -Itli sulphuric
acid. It is these fumes tho men say
which cause their teeth to decoy
rapidly cton In such n short space
of time as three mouths. Save for
causing a soreness ot the skin tho
fumes apparently do them no otlior
harm and have so effect oa their
lungs though they cannot liolp but
inhnlo the acid-charged lumos. bev-
cral blowers bring fresh air from
tho outside but the fumes nre not
entirely dlspolled. Oil some days
when the wind blows from such n
quarter as to force the fumes back
rather thuu draw thean out the men
aro obliged to work with cloth over
their noses. Yet all the vorkers lu
the pit seem satisfied and say they
do not mind the fumes after they
have become accustomed to them.
Even tho men who work over the
pits on the outside show decaying
teeth nnd say in that respect that it
is just as bad to work 01 or the pit
as it is insldo it.
ENGLAND'S WEDDING RING.

"The Wedding Ring of England" Is
of plain gold set with a largo table
ruby on which tho cross of St.
George is engraved.
Legend says that this ring1 belonged
to Edward tho Confessor nnd that
he bestowed it an an old beggar who
asked an alms of him he having noth.
ing else nt hand nt the moment.
Soon afterward sajs Llppincott's
two English pilgrims lost their way
in the Holy Land nnd were suecored
by a "fayre oldo man" who on part-
ing said to them: "I am Johnn tho
Erangelyst; and sayc 3 e vnto Edward
yovr kjng that I grete him v.dl by
tho tokon that he gaff to nn il.ys
rynffe with hys ono haudes."
Certain it Is that James II. when
detained by the fishermen of Sheer-
ness oh his first attempt to ileo tho
country in 10S8 contrived to hide a
ring called "tho coronation ring" in
his clothing.
This was n favorite riny ot Mary
queon ot Scots and was sent by her
at her death to James I. finally com-
ing into the possession of George I.
through the channels by which he ob-
tained all the remaining papers of the
house of Stuart.
At the coronation the archbishop
puts the ring ou the fourth finger of
his majesty's right Jianu saying:
"Jtecelre this ring the ensign of king-
ly dignity nnd of defense of the Cath-
olic fnith.'
