AT THE CHURCHES
Interesting Sermons by Vi-
nlta Pastors.
Yesterday tho Inclement weather
provenlod a very largo attondanco
nl tho churches. Tho sermons
wero exceptionally good howevor.
Rev. V. T. King nl tho I'resbylo-
rlan church took for his text:
"By Him nil that believe nro
justified ironi nl! things from
which you could not bo justified
bv tho Inw ol Moses " Acts
xiii. 3i).
The chapter In which our text is
found is n very interesting une
indeed. First we learn thai tho
Holy Ghost in tho early history
of thn church separated the work-
ers lor tho Lord's work. He is
tho Spirit of grace over present to
seek and to sivo. Fivo lnborers
were assembled at Autiuch minis-
tering to tho Lord; I hoy believed
In waiting Upon tho guidance ot
tho Spirit in the Important mailer
of choosing lender?. Tho Holy
Spirit said separate unto mo Bar-
nabas nnd Saul unto tho Work
whoreunto I have called IIipiii.
Galled unto for a epociflo work.
Then wohave the incident of Bar-
Jeeus the sorcerer' fulfilling tho
words uf our Lord. John ix 39
For judgment came I into this
world that those seeing might be
made blind. Paul and Barnabas
entered into the synagogue on tho
Sabbath day where were assembled
a number of both Jews and Gen
tiles. Hero any Jow might bo
allowed to speak. Paul recounts
God's dealings with his nnclont
peoplo leading up to the promise
of a Saviour his death and rising
from the dead according to
prophecy.
And now through this man was
preached unto them tho forgive
noes of sin and justification to nil
them that believo. It was all clear
aB an unmized goBpel always is
for all Is accomplished by Christ
and Iuib only to he told and re
ceived that God justifies apart
from tho law on the righteous
ground that Christ died for our
Bins. Did He? "Why yes I
think so." Well then what has
become of tho believers' sins ?
Forgiven yoo and blotted out;
hence there is now "therefore no
condemnation to them which nro
in Chri'l. This is (he sinner's
gospel forgiveness and justifica-
tion tfirough Christ alone. No-
where do wo find tho Jew urged to
maintain hiu' live up to the law
nor is dtkf0io told to accept it
for soTvfljri. "It is of grace that
it might be by faith but if it is by
grace it is no mor of works; other-
wise grace is no mire grace. Yea
men are asking " vhy does God
allow anybody to be lost?" Wo
think that this question is asked
in the spirit or frame of mind in
which Pilato asked "What is
truth?" Not interested enough to
wait for an answer. It is heoause
againbt all the provisions uf grace
the overtures of love the entreat
ies of God to mou they will not
heed "They that hate me love
death" says God.
The gospel of the grace of God
is clearly slated in the New Testa-
ment. It comes by divine warrant
and is to all men. In our text we
have the two sides ol the matter
of salvation. All that believe are
those appointed to eternal lifo and
all that oomo to Christ are drawn
by the Father. No one need bo
troubled. If he believe on the
Lord Jesus Christ then ho may
know that he whs chosen and given
to Christ. The moment any man
receives Christ the gift nl God by
faith he henroforth becomes the
righteoutnesB of God in him; he is
resonoiled to God made his child
and heir an heir of God and a
joint heir with Christ.
"Til dim llial ivn.Li.lli nnl t.n.
belloveth on Him that jus'ifieth
the ungodly IiIb faith is oounted
for righteousness" Every believer
ia in Christ Jesus and identified
with him. Therefore all Christ
did and is beoomes his possession;
his fail!) may claim all "Know
yo not that so many of ub as were
baptized into Jesus Christ were
baptized into his death? There-
fore we Are buried with him by
baptism into death that like as
Christ was riistd up fiom the dead
by the glory of the Father; even
so we also should walk in newness
of life." The baptism here meant
is the baptism of the Holy Ghost
uniting ub to Christ that we may
have union with him in his life
and death and resurrection I Cor.
xii 13. Herein lies the great dif-
fereuce between an unbeliever out
of Christ and the believer in Christ.
The unbeliever lias his judgment
day beforo him but the believer in
Christ has his judgment day be-
hind him; for him judgment for
aln is past and gone. "There is no
condemnation" for him that believ-
eth on Jesus ia not condemned
John ill 13. "By him all that
believe aro justified from all things
from which ye could not be justl.
fied by tho law ol Moses " Those
people who expect to eain heaven
by "doing" will fall aa surely as
niii tnev or ni iluil m?rK'
templo of Babel. God grant that
they may learn this truth ere it be
too Into to trust alone in the fin-
ished work of Christ. Thu law
could not save us; it could nut
mako us good eofo" or happy; the
fault was not however with tho
law but with us. The law is holy
just nnd good but wo have sinned
against it; and thus mado it incap-
able of saving us. Tho man dead
In sin needs life the law cannot
give lile; it can and does o iiulemn
uc; "if there had beon n law given
which could have given life light-
oousnesB would have been by Inw."
The law demands perfeot obedi-
ence but it can impart no power
to obey. Then why was the Inw
given? It wns given to teach tho
sinner his lost condition both by
nature and by practice; this it docs
by placing boloro us a perfect
Btandurd of what truo righteous-
ness is from this etandcrd wo
learn how far from it wo are. But
what tho law could not do the
law of the Spirit of life can do.
God sent his son as our substitute
in tho likeness of sinful flesh who
met and in his owtl person paid
the penally of sin yen exhausted
that penalty by his death. "He
becomes the end of thu law for
rightoousness for every one that
believed) on him."
They who cannot bo accused
cannot be condemned. Our iniq-
uity has been transferred to Christ.
Did Christ die? All tho members
of his body died with him. Will
Christ appear again? "When
Christ who is our Lifo shall ap-
pear then shall we also appear
with him in glory." He has given
us the sure pledge. "It is Christ
that died; yea rather that is risen
again." The statement of our
Lord in John v 24 is enough to
silence our fears in relation to a
judgment for sin. "Verily verily
I say unto you ho that heareth
my word and believeth pn him
that sent me hath everlasting life
and shall not come into judg-
ment but is passed from death
unto life." Faith and love can
give this statement in proof that
the believer will not stand to bo
judged atthe greaf'while throne."
Ton many are taken up with whnl
they believe or how they believe.
Faith and doctrino aro both es-
sential for instruction and peace
of mind but let us lay hold of a
person viz. "whom I have be-
lieved." II Tim. i 12.
At tho Methodist church Ilov. C
L. Browning delivered another must
excellent sermon.
TEXT "Jesus unswcrcJ and said
unto them Go and show John again
those tilings vhjch yc do hear and sec.
The blind receive tholr sight and the
lame walk the lepers are clo.m-cd
and the deaf hear the dead arc raised
up; and the pour have the gispol
pleached unto them. And blessed Is
he whosoever Is not offended in me"-
Matt. 11:4-0.
The text is the answer which Christ
gave to the niasMiigcfH sunt from
John to Inquire If Jeus wero the
Christ. At first thought the text
would point to John us a changablo
man In his fault since before this
time he had pointed out Jesus as "ihc
Lamb of God who Ukuh away tho
slu of thu world"; h.idseen i ho descent
ol the spirit upon Mini and hud hour J
tho voice from heaven declare "Till
l-i my beloved Sun In whum 1 am well
pleased." Now after all these testi
monies and proofs of His divinity how
John can become unsettled in his
mind and sond this deputation to en-
quire Into the divinity of tho Lord
has been a puzzle to muuy. John'
however held the opinion of ttio
kingdom uf ChrUt In common with
the Jewi-; vis ilut It would be u tem
poral kingdom of force. Looking at
the kingdom or Christ from this point
of view It Is very reasonable to sup-
pose that John who for many months
had been In prison for llio sake of Ihc
right would become dlfCOUNgod be-
cause Chrlsl whoio fore runner he
w;iii would permit him to suffer long-
er. "If he Is the ChriM and If he
ha- come to ml up a temporal king
dom of righteousness and that by
fore why do-she permit me to re
main In this prison any lunger why
does lis nut drive Herod from the
throne rout the enemies of theJows
re establish the temporal kingdom of
David teir down thes uld priun
walls and sot me free?"
Christ's answor was meant to teach
the true nature of the kingdom of
God and also to denlgnato the things
which are the highest pi oof of his
divinity. The following losuns may
be gathered from the text:
1. Christianity is nut vindicated by
words. Chrlsl did not argue with the
messengers. He did not profess to
come down from heaven at this tlmo
ond offer this i-s a proof of Ills divin-
ity. Ho did not mention tho Imma-
culate conception the annunciation
the visit of wiso men from the Eest
tho star of Bethlehem nor oven the
dotccnt of the Spirit In the form uf a
dovo and tho heavenly voice which
John had already wituessod. Ho did
not ask the mosnengers to wait till
Ho could preach them a sermon or to
writo down an argument In proof of
his divinity
2. Christianity Is not vindicated by
organized churches Ho referred to
nocrocd to uosystomof philosophy
to no organized rules of living. Those
may bo nocessary In the oxpresslon of
Christianity but can never bo a proof
of Its divinity.
This deilncs tho mission of tho
Christian church. Kindness nnd
helpfulness tu tho world's allllctcd In
a physical way Is ono mark of tho di-
vine mission of tho church. Tho
best way to reach the hungry Is to
go to them will) the gospel (in ono
other. Tho host way to reach the
sick Is in carry tho medicine In ono
hand and tho prescription of the
Grout Physician In tho oilier always
tillering tho temporal before you oiler

ch u roh open rite rye of II:-. vplrllu
ally lil I nil unslop the oiirs "t tho
spiritually deaf hial tho spirit-
ually I a mo cast out devils and
rale the spiritually iloiul and then
Ihu world will linvu uonlldonce in our
Christianity and tho proof or our ill-
vino missldn will not bo doubled.
Let us give the poor n hourly welcome-
lo our services; lei. us lift the
world tn it c iniun platform of brnther-

It Hint gospel which teaches tho
Inve uf Christ fur ovory man and J ct
his eternal hatred of slu. "Blessed

such a Christ in such n Christ nnd In
such a gopol.
3. Christianity U nut vindicated by
a mere creed however correct that
ereod iuiy be. It may bo ablo to
prove "Aposiollo succession;'' It may
set fortli the doctrine or "election
and predostlunllou" in ihelr true
light; it may ho nhlo to oslabllsh tho

may have tho only correct church pol-
ity and hold Ibo Ihoorlcs uf regenera-
tion and saticllllcatlqn In Ihelr pris-
tine purity and ct It may not bo tho
chinch of Christ.
Tho highest proof uf tho divinity or
Christ nnd the only absolute proof of
any church is the proof which Christ
gave to the messengers sent to him.
For a time it seems that he did not
answor thorn at all. There was gath-
ered a groat mullltudo uf ruined and
helpless people and he was ongaged
In opening tho eyes of tho blind un-
stopping the cars uf tho deaf hunting
the lamo cleansing tho lepers casting
out devils raising tho (load and
preaching tho gospel to tho poor and
whon he had tlmo to give his atten-
tion lo the messengers sent lie told
them to tell John tho things which
thoy had hoard and scon oiler those ns
the highest proof of his divinity.
