have helped to make America are
set fprtli in it: ono a northern
Yankee quaint rugged and wise;
the other a man who has the hardy
traits of a Purilap with the roman-
tictemporament of a Cavalier. The
scene of the story ia in (bo neigh-

Hie title id "D'rl and I." It will
begin in thu March Century and

During the week tho fact that
only two civil trials have been had

The first trial was an intruder

against W. Coates. The jury
found for SprouBe giving him pos-

tion together with 8C5dainngeB.
A notable case that has attracted
great attention was tho action
brought by Joe Davis und others
against Wm. Stephens Stan Sua-
gee and Rose Fuerateln. Every
point in the trial was Btubbornly
contested by the attorneys of each
side. After an elaborate and care-
fully prepared charge by Judge
Gill the jury letired last evening
and returned a verdict this morn-
ing finding for the plaintiff for
posseeaion or tho Stephens claim
with damages for rental since
December 1804 for 81675. The
jury found thatSuagee was entitled

known as the Slucke claim and
that Rose Fuerstein was legally

JAPAN'S NEW MOUNTAIN.
The Emperor Glre n Japanese Name
to Mount MorrUon In
Formoin.
The highest point In the large island
of Formosa Is Mu Kan-Shan or Wood-
ed mountain. For many years It has
been known to the -world by the namo
of Mount MorrUon after an- Kngllih
cantaln of one of the early vettols
trading to the Island. Up to quite
recently it was thought that Mount
Sylvia further north In the same rangn
was tho highest mountain of For-
mosa but It U now known to be orer-
topped by Mount MorrUon says the
New York Sun.
Since the Japanese took possession
ot the island ns one result of their
war with China they have engaged in
explorations of tho little-known east
ern half ot It as fast at tho troubles In
which the hostile population have in-
volved them permitted. Among the
Japanese explorers who have been
busy in the unknown mountains are
Lieut. Salto and Dr. Honda who are
believed to be the first persons who
havo succeeded in reaching the heav-
ily forested summit of MorrUon.
It Is only a few year ago that a
peocrantfer wrote of the mountain: "It
U said to be 12.8&0 feet in height but
it Is not improbable that this esti-
mate Is too high and that the real sum-
mit of the range culminates in tome
other mountain. Hut thete Japanese
explorers have determined the height
it Mount MorrUon to be 13705 feet
and have established the fact that It
It the culminating point of the island."
These intareating facts attracted the
attention of ine emperor of Japan who
recently expressed the opinion that
the highest point ot the Japanese em-
pire should no longer bear an Kngllih
name. The emperor ha accordingly
decreed that the mountain shall not
be officially known in Japan by its
English name but thall hereafter bi
called Xwltaka-wama which means
New High mountain.
The mountain it not of voloenlq
srlgln at wag formerly supposed but Is
formed ot sedimentary rocks with!
granite at the top.

Foot-binding in China is in obedlenca
to custom merely and not to law. The
same may be said about wearing cues.
No gentleman in China would go with
out a cue any more than a gentleman
would wear one In thin country. It is
not true that Chinese who cut off their
-cues are executed. They are not pun-
