A Corn Crop.
This isn't much of a corn country
but Pal Shanahan has just sold 3000
bushels at White Oak switch for 25
cents a bushel and has 2000 bushels
left. The last of his crop was gath-
ered by the renter the first of March
aud instead of getting 0000 bushels
out of the 150 acres they did not get
over a fourth of that quantity as it
had rotted on the ground during the
winter. Mr. Shanahan has seldom
sold corn in past years never in such
large quantities but lie lost 100 head
of hogs and had none left to feed it to
aud did not care to Imiv. This i the
first lime the gentleman ha ever had
the cholera among his hogs and he
has raided a great many in years fMSt

THAT BANQUET.
Twenty Persons aid its Suc-
cess by Their Presence.
What was In sonic respects the
most elaborate banquet ever spread in
the city u as sat down to last Thursday
by a score of gentlemen at the Murop-
olous cafe. The hosts were Mr. O. S.
Carlton of Dallas general agent of
the southwestern department of the
American Union Insurance company
and Mr. J. U. Dickinson who has been
representing the company in tlu Ur-
ritory. The function was in the na-
ture of a reception to Mr. Charles S.
Whitney vice president and general
mamiger of the company of New
York who llie southwestern repre-
sentatives of the company wished
might be lead to form a favorable
opinion of the Indian Territory.
Whatever might have been the result
from their standpoint certain it is
that the AMnita guests formed a very
high opinion of the American Union
folks and it lsdifticult to dispel the
feeling that such very clever gentle-
men must represent an excellent com-
pany. The gentlemen named with
one of our local sportsmen spent the
day in the field and killed a very good
bag of quail. It is not surprising
then that Mr. Whitney a Hrst cousin
by the way of Mr. Cleveland's popular
secretary of the same nam" made his
way through the half dozen elaborate
courses which the eatercrspreadwith
a marked relish aud at the close de-
clared his unbounded faith in the
Indian Territory's future.
Turtle soup baked bass quail on
toast salads baked duck turkey with
cranberry sauce sherbet coffee aud
cigars have a wonderful effect even
on these New York millionaires who
dine this way every night in the year.
And even with a consciousness of hav-
ing fifteen million dollars laid up for
a rainy day so he could quit work be
independent and call a spade a spade
Mr. Whitney was overturning with
good things to say for this country.
His two lieutenants who pieccded
him also had several good reasons for
the lielicf that the Indian Territory
was a promising field for the Ameri-
can Union to cuter. Judge Thomas
was then called on and made a char-
acteristic speech reciting a number
of reasons why in his judgment a
life insurance company which had in-
vaded Texas need have no question
of the Indian Territory. His descrip-
tion of a "quiet week'' which he once
spent in Dallas during which a murder
or two was committed a correspond-
ing number of lynchings followed a
bank was robbed the cashier shot ami
a block or two of buildings burned up
between times produced a good deal
of merriment. Mayor Itutlington
welcomed the gentlemen to the city
and hoped they would establish a
"headquarters camp' here and Coi.
Jonathan Gore told of the Indian
Territory and its people of forty years
ago and "what they done" to him.
Edgar Smith set forth some cogent
reasons for "the faith that's in
him"' and did it in a very happy vein.
The speech making was cut short by
the approach of train time Mr. Whit-
ney and Mr. Carlton being comiwUcd
to go to Kansas City. The affair was.
from all standpoints a most enjoyable
one and if Mr. Whitney saw any evi
dences of dyspepsia that Ikiiic to life
insurance companies which is said to
kill more Americans than any other
malady the symptoms were certainly
not Ios of appetite.
Those present in addition to the
three ollkers of the company were
Judge Thomas Edgar Smith P. S.
Davis S. F. Dickey T. D. Edlin W.
L. Trott T. M. llutllngton E. N.
Williamson J. C. Anderson Capt. S.
S. Cobb E. IN. Uatcliff and M. E.
Mil ford.
Mr. Dickinson remained over in the
city until today aid goes to Hot
springs tonight to visit his wife and
little daughter. This gentleman has
had a decidedly checkered career: was
captured and held -for some mouths
by th Comanches in childhood
made and lost a big fortune in New
Yor! and was incarcerated in a Mexi-
can prison several months for printing
something uncomplimentary atiout an
ollicial of thatcountr).

in scliool lines this summer at Wor-
cester Academy. A summer school
aud normal institute will lie opened
June 12 in charge of Prof. W. A.
Caldwell assisted by first-class nor-

and special branches is not enough.
Instruction in method course of
study mind developments ab-olutcly
necessary to successful teaching.
