"It seems that as long as the watch

Ho caressed tho watch fondly

Uour after hour it spoke and ho was
enabled to endure tho terrible loneli-

that ho put words to that ticking and
tho watch seemed almost like a thing

Fltzslinmons Is tho champion pugilist

demonstrated his right to it In a
fair fight Ho met his ono great rival
James J. Corhctt In tho squared cir-

and tlio best man won. Tho vic-
tory was not gallicd without n slntg

possible for Fltrslmmons until tho last
moment of tho bnttle. Many had
thought ho was slowly going to pieces
but when tho opportunity came he had
been watching for tho end of the fight
came almost in n slnglo blow.
When Corbott finally nrose with tho
assistance of his attendants nnd recov-

carding nil tho rules which govern tho
art of which he Is a disciple rushed at
his victorious opponent and made n
vain struggle to beat him over tho
ropes only desisting when his own sec-
onds and friends forced him nwny.
Corhctt afterwards broke away and
rushed nt Fitzslmmons a second time
but this time instead of attempting to
renew tho fight he implored his victor
to give lilin another chance and to ac-
cept another challenge from him.
This was refused and warm words fol
lowed ritzslmmons was borno away
with all the glory of his new won vic-
tory and Corbott left to return to his
home in San Francisco carrying with
him the despair of defeat.
It was a great contest but notwith
standing tho cheers for the vletor tho
majority of tliovj who witnessed it
could not but feel a sense of disap
pointment nt the rosult believing as
they did that victory was taken from
Corhctt at a moment when ho seemed
uru of gaining It himself.
It was a moment after tho noon
hour when tho principals and their
seconds appeared and both wcrn

For live round the battle continued
without much gain for cither side
Corhctt landed oftcner than his oppo-
nent but when Fitz got In his terrible
right on theliead or body it counted
heavily. In tho fifth Corbett landed a
ttaggcring blow on tho mouth which
sut Fitz's lip open nnd started his
mouth to bleeding bndly. Tho blood
which wns soon spattered over the baro
breasts nnd shoulders of tho men in-
Darned the crowd to the highest pitch
of excitement. Fitz was on his knees
and stayed thcro for eight seconds.
Fitz apparently realized that his only
thow was nt close quarters for he kept
boring in and finally lie caught Corbett
under the chin with a left in tho ninth
and there was a roar from tho crowd.
In tho tenth when Fitz got in a right
on tho body and a left on the jaw there
wero shrieks of delight as tlio rr.und
ended. Up to the end ot tho tenth
round Corbett had not received a mark
ot any consequence but iu this round
bitz seemed tlio stronger of the
two and he was fighting llko
a demon. In tho 14th tho end camo

that did the business was a left hand
blow over the heart Jim staggered
and Fitz struck him right on tho jaw.
Jim sank to his knees clinging to the

pain and ho could not breathe. Ho
tried in vain to rlso but each time ho
sank back in ngony with his hands over
his heart. Slowly Slier counted tho
fatal seconds and when S.u raised his
hand at tho tenth second a roar went
up from tho crowd. Hob stood over-
looking his fallen rival waiting to ad
minister the finishing blow if Jim got
up but his caution was unnecessary.
Jim's seconds rushed Into tho ring
und hnstled him to his corner. Cor-
bett revived and when he learned lie
had lost the fight had became frantic.
Ho broke away from his seconds
and rushed about hunting for FHzslm-
mons and striking blindly right nnd
left It was a pitiful exhibition of
Impotent rage. His seconds tried In
vain to control him hut hu struck
viciously at them as well as at others.
Finally they ltuMmmI him by the arms

Bubbles or Medals.
" Hest sarsaparillas." When you think of It how contradic-
tory that term Is. For there can be onlv ono best in anything ono
best sartanarilla as there Is one highest mountain one longest
river one deepest ocean. And that best sarsaparlUa is ? ....
There's the rub I You can measure mountain height and ocean
dip th but how test sarsaparilla? You could If you were chemists.
Ilut then do you need to test It? The World's Fair Committee
tested It and thoroughly. They went behind the label on the
bottle. What did this sarsaparilla test result in? Every mako
of sarsaparilla shut out of the Fair except Aycr's. So It was
that Aycr's was the only sarsaparilla admitted to tho World's
Fair. Th committee found it the best. They had no room for
anything that was not the best. And as the best Ayer'a Sarsa-
parilla received the medal and awards due its merits. Kemcmber
the word "best" Is a bubble any breath can blow but there are
pins to prick such bubbles. Those others arc Mowing more
"best sarsaparilla" bubbles since the World's Fair pricked tho
old ones. True but Aycr's Sarsaparilla has the medal. The
pin that scratches the medal proves It gold. The pin that pricks
the bubble proves it wind. We point to medals not bubbles
when we says The best sarsaparilla Is Aycr's.
