S VIEW of the fact that Saturday
4 next the JOth anniversary of the
Republican party is to be generally
observed throughout the country as
well as at Vinita a brief sketch of the
party's early history may be interest-
ing. On the 22nd day of Feb. lS56.the
first convention at which a perman-
ent national organization was effected
was held at Pittsburg Pa. The call
of the first national convention was is-
sued in January. It was signed by
the chairman of the Repubiicon state
committees of five states Ohio Mass-
achusetts Pennsylvania Vermont and
Wisconsin. It was designed to be a
nominating convention but the ob
ject as stated in the call was the per
fecting of a national organization and
providing for a national delegate con-
vention of the Republican party at
some subsequent day to nominate can-
didates for the presidency and vice
presidency. Twenty-four states res-
ponded. Francis P. Blair Sr. of
Maryland presided and Owen Love-
joy of Illinois made a profound sensa-
tion in the convention and the coun-
try by his remarkable prayer at the
opening. The session lasted two days.
A memorable address to the country
was issued and about a mouth later
March "9 a formal call for the con
vention was issued specifying the
number of delegates for each state
Philadelphia as the city in which to
hold the convention and June 17th
thedatc. There was no barring out
of the people. The Pittsburg meeting
could not be a delegate convention so
it passed the question of a ticket over
to sucli a convention nearly four
months later.
