For gome weeks past Frazeo
has abused Tom Howie through
tho columus of tho Champion in
a most unreasonable and vicious
manner. Howie comes back at
tho doctor(?) this week in tho
columns of this paper in what is
probably the severest retort and
the most thorough skinninga man
over got through tho columns of a
newspaper in tills country or any
other. Howie knows whereof be

Clem Rooers is authority for
tho statement that all tho citizen
eliin attorneys in this nation in
eluding Hoolio Bell are National
men and aro trying to defeat Sam
Mayes and elect Bob Ros3. And
it may be added that if there is a
man in tbo Cherokee nation quali-
fied to speak advisedly on this
subject it is C. V. Rogers. As a
member of tho appraisement com-
mission that has just concluded
appraising intruder places in this
nation ho had ample opportr.tity
to know. It was tho duty of this
commission to question each in
truder as to how thoy came to bo
in the country and nearly inva-
riably the cause was traced to
somo citizenship lawyer whose
namo was given freoly by tho
claimant. In this matter Clem
Rogers halds a full hand and is
not afraid of being "called."
The campai n has developed
ono thing at least in Bob Robs'
favor and that is that ho maintains
his dignity and the bearing of
a Gentleman even In tho heat of
political discussion. When Hoes
refused to speak at Tuhlrquah iie-
causo his opponent was not pres-
ent being at the bed side of his
tick wife he showed tho spirit of
truo manhood. But as much can
not be said of many of those who
essay to assist the National party
in the campaign. Tho press of
tbo National party with ono or
two exceptions has been vituper-
ativo and dirty in the extreme
and they began throwing mud
right and left early in the cam
paign. Temporary "journalists"
who went into the campalgifY with
nothing in the way of character to
lose thoy havo by universal ac-
knowledgment been a hindrance
to the National cause and tho de-
feat that now seems ipevitablo for
Mr. Ross is duo (n no small meas-
ure to tho weakness and indiscre-
tion of thoso who sought to mould
public opinion in his favor.
A strange strange story is told
ol a 12 year-old boy in the neigh-
borhood of Chouteau. It is said
the boy is poasossed of evil spirits.
It seems that strango noises are
heard near him when he is in the
fluid at work and that small peb-
bles fall on him causing pain.
Sometimes when hols in bed theso
pebbles will striko tho celling and
fall around him and at ether
times sharp pains as needles pierc-
ing striko him and he cries out
with pain and jumps from tho bed.
It is said that tho phenomenon has
caused considerable oxcitment in
his neighborhood. Wagoner Rec-
ord. Shucks that's nothing; tho old
man up at the Champion ofllco has
ovory ono of these symptoms and
a hundred more and worBO on en
too. A while back he got ft copy
of Tub Chieftain on Thursday
morning and got up and walked
dawn to tho .mayor's oillpo and
back four limes without stopping
to sit down. Another time he jot
three rattlesnakes out oi one of his
brogaiis and still another tjirie ho
found a pair of negro babies qt tho
bottom of a jar of alcohol Tho

HELL ADVERTISES
Hoollo Boll's campaign fdr bloc:
tion to tho sonato in Doldwdfo has
taken a new tiirn. It has tho car
marks of dospcratlon. Tho prosa
of tho district and country being
against him ho hiros a pngo of the
Vinita Globo and advortlsos him.
self. Ho writes his own adror
tiscments and doos something that
nobody olso would do; says that ho
is honest and truthful and good.
Ho is soro about somolhlng. He
has a grievance Ho gives twenty-
nlno reasons why ho should ho
voted for. Ho glvos vent to his
capacity for joking.
Now hoar him. Ho begins by
saying ho is loyal to tho Chorokoo
nation and always has been. Now
that is really a picco of new and
nobody would over havo thought
of it but Bell.
Sicond "Ho pays 100 cants on
tho dollar;" yes and so does
Frazeo.
Third "Ho Is respected for tho
enemies ho has mado."
Now ho imagines that ho is like
G rover Cloveland.
Fourth (If you havo lojnJ prc.

a statesman.
Right heir j8
whoro
the laugh
don't for-
should
omo in. But
S'inat it Is an advertisement.
Fifth "Tho pcoplo know him
and can rely on his integrity."
Ho is getting lunny now. Bell's
integrity is a standing joke and
we had an exemplification of his
integrity last summer at the pay-
ment. Sixth "Ho hat lived fifty years
in Dolawaro district."
This is probablj tho best reaion
he has for asking pooplo to vote
for him and we ro:kon it can't bo
denied that ho has lived tbero that
long but it doos soom that ho has
oeen thero for a much longer per
iod.
Seventh "Ho is tho only aspir
ant for that office in Delegare dis
trict who 'can draft a bill.' "
Now this is a hard thing for Bell
to say about tho intelligence of Del
awaro. - Mr. Bell's statement that
ho is tho onlv man in tho district
capablo ot drafting a bill is in
keeping with his whole puffed up
career.
Ho says that ho has written
more than half tho laws on our
statuto books.
Wonder who wroto tho other
half? And if ho can writo half
our laws in fifty years how long
would it take him to write all of
'em?
Ho says that "Ho is tho only
man in the raco that can raako a
"speech."
Well wo must admit .that ho is
an orator and thero is no mistako
about that.
"Ho says that ho is a good law-
yer and one of tho brainiest men
in the Chorokco nation."
This is where another big laugh
comes in.
"He is no hypocrite" This Is
aimed for a joke too but it is not
as funny as Bomo other thlng ho
says.
"He is a born leader of men."
Look around and see who ho Is
leading and decide whethor they
are men or not.
"The public press of tho district
and his own town has been subsi-
dized against him."
When the public ptcss is against
a man luo people nau uoiior m
him alone.
"He stands for and Insists upon
the collection of the cattlo tax."
Yes he stood for and collected
tho Strip cattlo tax once and kept
it and tho nation never got a cent
of it.
"Ho favors and upholds tho
laws of tho Chorokoo nation."
Tbo kind of honesty that has to
be labeled is tho kind that should
be watched.
"Ho ineists upon equal rights
of all Cherokee cltize'ns white
black or red."
He is right now engaged in try-
ing to array ono class of our cit-
izens against another and has
Baid repeatedly that the whito
adopted pcoplo had no rights hero.
Now how about hypocraoy?
"Has osaiBted in building every
church in town."
Well did anybody over sco
Hoolio Bell at church?
Mr. Bell's advertisement is like
that of the patent medicine man
or that of tho traveling circus.
IJo says things about himself that
nobody ol(" could ho induced to
say and that no newspaper of any
standing could afford to say.

A represontatlvo of The Chief-
tain interviewed Chief Harris at
Pryor Creek Tuesday and elicited
information in regard to somo mat-
ters of more or less general Impor-
tance to tho public and of great
importanco to tho clasaos of Chero-
kee citizens named. In the first
placo tho chief was asked what was
tho prospect of an early payment
of tho Old Sottlor money so long
duo. Ho said that this payment
seemed to bo hanging firo on ono
point only and thnt was'that cer-
tain Old Settlors that had never
appeared boloro tho commission
to bo enrollod havo sinco applied
to tho secretary of tho intorior.
Tho question now is as to whether
tho action of our commission hero
is final or not and Secretary Smith
is in a quandary whether to re-
open the rolls again or not. The
chief has recommended that the
action of tho commissioner be
made final ns any ovidence takon
would bo -altogether ox-parto and
"NOW THAT I HAVE A TADLOCK O'l

in his opinion "ono-sidod." It Ib
very probable. Chiof Harris said
that the Old Settler payment will
be mado by the latter part pf Au-
gust no matter what tho decis-
ion is
The chief stated in rpgard to the
Dolawarcs that n gontloman named
Dickson of St Lou!shad recolved
instructions to proceed at once to
Nowata and begin making n roll of
Dolawaroa. He will also go to any
other places ho may think neces-
sary. Tho payment of this money
will bo mado as soon as tho roll la
completed and approved by the au
thoritiea at Washington. This
man is not tho disbursing ngont
but is only instructed to tako tho
pensus qf the Delawarea.
In tho ' Shawneo matter Chiof
Harris haa recommended that this
class of our people be paid In full
and informed tho secretary of tho
interior that no further fight would
be mado in this case by the Chero-
keos. Ho urged atrongly that tho
full amount bo paid them and tho
secretary now has tho tr)atter under
advisement and tho chief thinks
his decision will be favorablo al-
though ho has nothing defini :s
the matter yet. This question
will not delay going ahoad with
tho work of the census. It Is Chiof
Harris' opinion that an agent will
be appointed within ton days to
begin tho work and that tlioro
is no doubt bill tlat tho nayirjent
tp Delawarea and Shawiiecs will
bp mado by September 1st 1805
The chief stated that he had
asked that tho Delawarea bo al-
lowed tho lull amount duo them
also.
In roferenco to tho Frecdmcn.
Chief Harris said: "Thero aro
000 negroes on tho Wallaco roll
not entitled to any rights in this
country and a motion has been
mado for an appeal by tho Chero-
kees on this point only so you
may Btato positively that an ap-
peal has been takon." Tho chiof
also requested that all bona fido
Frcedmen citizens be paid tho full
amount of money- duo them as
soon as tho courts dotormincd who
woro citizens. ""'
Chief Harris said that his recent
trip to Washington was principally
in reference to tho intruders to
soo if somo action could not be
taken at onco toward making n
final settlement with theso pcoplo
how it was to bo accomplished
how to collect tho rents and if it
was necesary to tender them mon-
ey or if a check would bo legal

cording to appraisement. Tho sec-
retary now has this matter under
advisement and as tho report of
tho appraismont commission has
bcon approved a copy tvill booh bo
submitted to tho Chorokco authori-
ties with full directions as to man-
ner of collecting rents otc but
probably nothing will be dono be-
