orchards are in the midst of the
arid region where irrigation is de
pended on entirely except in this
one enso yet here the finest fruit
and the best trees have been grown
and entirely without irrigation.
The secrot is easily found proper
cultivation Here we show what
can bo done by it. The lefsons
taught by these orchards are not
for the benefit ot the arid regions
alone hut nre adapted for the
country at large for orchardists of
the ruin belt a-t wwj as ol the dry

Settling Indian Claims.
A Washington dispatch of Sept.
20th savs Mr. Hober J. Mav late
ly the law partner of ox-Attorney
General Garland has been in con-
ference with Judge Sims acting
secretary of the interior frequently
of late with reference to the pay-
ment of the firm's fee as counsel
for the Old Settlor Cherokee In-
dians in thoir claim against the
government. This claim has been
pending for twenty years and
arises out of treaties and agree-
ments between the government and
the Indians A few years uko the
Indians were authorized to present
tnetr claim to tno united states
court ol claims and thoru they re-
ceived a judgment for about 8S00.-
0(j0 This judgment wan Inter con-
firmed by the federal supremo
court and in accordance with these
dcifciotn congress in tho sundry
civil appropriation bill of this
year appropriated the necessary
monoy to pay tho Indinnq. Of tho
amount awarded by the coutts tho
Indians agreed to allow their attor-
neys thirty-fivo per cent. Moro
than a dozen attornoys havo been
employed by them nt diflbrtnt
times and tho intorior department
is having considerable difficulty in
liquidating tho foeB which og?ro-
gsto more than 8275000. Messrs.
May and Garland havo a claim for
815000 but some of the attorneys
want much lnrgor sums. Tho
monoy is now in hand reiidy to be
paid out and this will ho do no as
soon as tho claims of all tho attor-
neys can lie thoroughly gone over
by tho dopaitment.
In connection with tho Chero-
kees and their Inter claim upon tho
govornmont arising out of the salo
of tbo Cherokee Strip it may be
added that tho treasury department
is urranging to issuo 80000000 of
uiioroKec Indian certificates as au-
thorized by tho last congress. The
printing will he done by tho gov-
ernment at tho expense of tho Now
York parties who take tho certifi-
cates or bonds in lieu of money ad-
vanced the Chcrokeo Indians. Tho
certificates will bo of various de-
nominations. TiiEiu: are no signs of tho polit-
ical pot boiling over at present at
least.
