veloped Into a chronic Inability to tako any
substantial food I was barely ablo to creep
about and at times I was prostratco br
spells of heart palpitation. This condition
continued until ono year ago.
"On tho 11th of April XS03 I suddenly
collapsod and for days I was unconscious
In fact I was not fully myself until July.
My condition on September st was simply
horrible I weighed but seventy pounds
whereas my normal weight Is lot pounds.
All over niy body there wcro lumps from
thoslzoof agrapototho slzo of a walnut
my fingers wcro cramped so that I could not
moro than half straighten them. I hid en
tirely lost control of my lower limbs and
mj hand trembled so that I could not drink
without spilling tho liquid. Nothing would
remain on my stomach and it seemed that
Imustdryupboforomany moro days had

"I mnJo another round of tho physicians

One of tho most peculiar of stono
formations is the "devil's looking
glass" on the Nolocliuchy river. It Is
a palisade which arises abruptly from
the river to a height of about two hun-
dred feet It Is perfectly smooth and
about ono hundred feet wide. When
tho sun is at a certain stage It throws
a shadow over the water and reflects
the sunbeams as a mirror would daz-
zling tho eyes of the beholder aomo-
times almost blinding him with Its
brightness.
To go upon the river In a skiff and
look down Into tho water Is to see an
Imago reflected hut always distorted.
It is this which gavo the namo
to tho formation nnd there aro
several Interesting leg.mds connected
with It some of which aro devotedly
believed by tho mountaineers. One of
those which s generally given credence
Is that every night at midnight when
tho moon sbluas tha devil goes there
to bathe and makes up his toilet using
the rock with the reflection of tbo
moonlight as n looking glass. St
