"PINB TOP" WHISKY
lofhoro nn Illlolt Still on Grand
Itlvor?
Tho roporl comes from over on Grand
Itlvor that an illicit distillery is In
oporatlou somewhoro In tho hills on
tho east side near tho tnoulh of Duck
Creek. Just before Christmas whisky
began to be sold In that neighborhood
the quality of which had strong sug-
gestions of "plno top" and moro than
one citlzon can testify to having pro-
cured a quantity or tho vllo stun ot
tho mtizzlo of a six sbuotcr. The
parly furnishing tho liquor goes by the
namoor "Santa Klaus" and is not a
stranger lo tho cltlzoug of that part
ot tho country.
A fow days ago an old man who
makes a living by hunting and ship-
ping (on tho si)) small game such
ns quail squirrels wild tuikeys etc.
was in n hollow bchw tho mouth of
Drowning Creek on suspicion of bo-
'ng a United Blalcsdclcctivo. Ho was
marched soma distance to a cavoin
tho overhanging bluir and questioned
as lo Ills business in that part ol the
wild and unsettled country. After
tho parties who had him under arrest
were satisfied that ho had no knowl-
edge of them or their business they
released him with tho admonition to
not Intrude again In that immediate
vicinity with tho promised penalty of
death if lie violated orders.
Country dances aro in great favor
In that neighborhood this winter and
a vendor of "pine top" is always on
hand and piles his trade with great
boldnoss and with llttlo or no danger
of being arrested or exposed. Ouly
one nan at a tltno is allowed to ap-
proach tho salesman and then at tho
muzzto of cocked revolvers.
Thero aro two theories among tho
neighbors us to how and where tho
supply Is obtained. Tho first and
most generally adhered to is that an
illicit distillery is being operated in
the ti lis somawhero near the place
above mentioned. Strength Is added
to this tiicory by the avowals of certain
Inhabitants of that regiou who claim
to know just how wild cat whisky
tastes having doubtless tasted it be-
fore. Tho other theory is that a boat
load ol tiio meanest whisky over made
in Missouri has been anchored for
somo weeks In Grand Itivcr near this
point aud is being totalled to "known
ami reliable purchasers.'
The latter theory loses much of its
forro when tho quantity used at an
oidinary "shin dig" is multiplied by
tho number or such gatherings that
havo been held during tho winter as
no small craft could contain such a
load.
Doath ofaOhlld.
Alfred aged ten tho youngest son
of A N. Green and wife died in this
city Sunday evening last of splual
meningitis. Uo was sick but a few-
days and trom tho- very outset tho
physicians doubted his recovery. The
funeral took plaeo Mouday afternoon
at tho Presbyterian church Itev. D.
Jf. Allen the pastor conducting tho
services. Mr. Green and lamily desire
to express their warmost thanks for
tho many acts or consideration shown
them by their neighbors and citizens
of t ho low n generally In their hour of
greatest misery.
Orcanizo a Company.
One of our citizens who has bad
much lo do with Ihesettlementof new
sections ol country and subduing of
lawlessness calls attention to a fact
which is recognized but overlooked.
This Is the necessity for organization
for mutual protection of llfo and prop-
erty. It Is known definitely that
within twenty or thirty miles of us a
band ol outlaws havo their headquar-
ters that they aro organizing and re-
cruiting their ranks and within a few
hours could mustor perhaps twenty-
11 vo men. It is hardly to bo doubted
that tho approaching payment is the
incentive that is stimulating them to
extra exertion just at this time. The
information that over six million dol-
lars aro soon to be paid out within
our borders will bring among us all the
thieves and cutthroats In j. south-
west (which are out of jai' J make
it posslblo for tho outlaws new here
lo raise as largo a forco as they wish.
To be prepared for a raid at any mo
ment is tho course which prudenco
suggests. Kobberlcs have beeu fre-
quent all around ub during tho past
year or two and thero aro no especial
reasons for believing that wo shall al-
ways bo spared Thero aro men and
arms enough lu this town to success-
fully resist ai: tho outlaws ever likely
to attack us if only wo ivereorgaulzed
could bo assembled the Instant an
alarm was given and had our guns at
hand. Doubtless we havo also In our
midst men competont both by reason
of their courage and experience to take
the lead and who would Inspire confi
dence In their subordinates. It has
beeu suggested that a company should
be formed and olllcored a centrally lo-
cated and accessible arsenal be socured
and an electrical or other system of
alarm provided. A concerted plan of
resistance In caso of attack at any one '
of the various portions of town could.
bo agreed upon by thoio In command
and in a short lima we should bo in
position to defeat any forco which is
likely to come against us. In addition
to the security which would ensuo
from the adoption of tho precautionary
ttipartires outlined a potont reason
would bs brought into exlstenco for
making a considerable payment of the
Strip money at this point and one
which should havo weight with council.
