"One of my neighbors Mr. John
Gilbert has been sick for a long
tunc. All thought hitnrast recovery.
He was horribly emaciated from the
inaction of his liver and kidneys.
Ibis difficult to describe his appear-

health ot that time. Help from any
source seemed impossible. He tried
your August Flower and the effect
upon him was magical. It restored
him to perfect health to the great

Louisville Kr. Dec. 10. At a few
minutes past 10 yesterday morning tlto
also vvotk nnd that part of tho mldtllo
pan of tho LouhrlUo & JofTcrsonvlllo
llrlilffo Co. in place (rave way and with
nil tho workmen was precipitated 110
feet Into tho water Mow. There was
but a moment'n wnrnlng and thosa
who escaped going down with tho mas
of Iron nnd timber started for tho piers
after tho first trcmbllnir Indicated tha
giving away of tho .also work Tho
nccidont wnS a linrrlblo one and Is the
Inst of a long list ot catastrophes that
haro marked tho construction of this
bridge.
Tho foreman In beginning work no-
ticed that during tho night tho "trav-
eler" which had been put In place tho
night before had been worked loosa
by tho wind. An order to draw It back
Into place was given nnd tho men und
engines started.
Iho wind was high at tho time and
tho gentlo swaying of the falso work
gradually forced tho "traveler" off of
the piles on which It was resting.
When tho end slipped tho whole work
trembled and tho men realizing
their danger started for tho piers.
As luck would have It tho central bent
was tho first to givo way and tho men
on this bent went down to be covered
with the mass of Iron nnd timber of tho
other bents which fell nlmost Immedi-
ately carrying with them tho other
workmen who failed to reach places of
safety on tho piers. The north bent
or the one attached to the Indiana pier
did not fall for fifteen minutes after
the other part went down.
As near as can bo ascertained there
wcro fifty-one men on tho bridgo when
tho alarm was given by tho engineer in
chargo of tho work. Of this number
several succeeded In reaching the piers.
Of thosa men who went down somo
Wcro covered by a mass of timber from
beneath which it will be days beforo
their bodies are recovered.
Tho first crash when the center bent
gave way was at 10:25 and it was then
tho great number of fatalities occurred.
Then a few minutes later another
bent on which there was but littlo of
tho bridge proper gave way on the In-
diana side of the river. In this it is
ociteveu nut one unknown man was
killed. Ho was caught by a rope and
dragged beneath the water.
The crash attracted the attention ot
those on tho shore and many turned
away their eyes and thej' saw the men
struggling in mid air In their mad ef-
forts to climb out of danger. When
the huge mass of material struck tho
water all was concealed for an Instant
by the spray that was thrown high
Into the air. An the water subsided
here and there could be scon men
struggling desperately to climb up on
the timbers that thrust their ends
above the water. A few succeeded in
clinging to the places of safety nnd
were quickly rescued by boats from tho
shore. Others struggled desperately
and were carried off by the current to
sink almost as rescue was at hand.
At whose doors must be laid the re-
sponsibility for the terrible accident
may never be known. It was oue of
those unforeseen accidents that oc-
curred in spite of all precautionary
measures llrldge building probably
more than any other thing Is fraught
with manifold dangers and the work-
men whoso labors are utilized In the
work practically take their lives in
their own hands.
General opinion ascribes the cause of
tho disaster to the swift wind that had
been sweeping the river all day. It
bore with great force on tho ponderous
frame work which necessarily became
loosened from the constant strain and
swaying of the heavy timbers.
It is estimated by the engineers of
the FhccnU llrldge Co that the loss to
tho bridge will be at least $100000.
The third span of the bridge collapsed
at 8:20 last night. So far as known
there was no one injured. This will be
nn additional loss of about $75030 to
tho bridgo company. Tho span had
been completed but the collapse ot the
fourth span is supposed to have
loosened and displaced it
Tho bridge had been under construc-
tion for n number of years (several
times work was suspended for lack of
funds. Two years ago the MaonIc
Savings bank tailed because of iU con-
nection with the bridgo company. He-
ccutlv financial assistance was ob
talned and work was resumed. Three
years ago in constructing tho piers
twelve men were killed In a caisson.
Accidents have been frequent and from
first to lastjlfty men have been killed.

Ho was tall and lanky with a longish
beard and mustachios a drooping nose
and a lumping under lip a high nnd
narrow forehead surmounted with a
stock of hay-colored hair. Altogether
his tout euscmblo reminded one
forcibly ot the picture of a satyr but
the kindly light of the blue eyes and
certain puckers of humor ubout the
capacious mouth proclaimed tho hid-
den existence of a genial soul.
The blue dungaree pantaloons were
generally rolled part way up the cow-
hide long loots. Certain threadbare
patches on the shoulders of the weather
beaten brownish gray coat gave evi-
dence of the chafing of gun and ax
handle.
I had been sleeping late one Scptem-
lier morning In his shade I was tired
for I had been the day before clamber-
ing about some tough parts ot the
mountain shooting dusky grouse. I
was still in bed but awoke when ho
stumbled through the half open door
capsizing the water pail and nearly
killing the cat with one fell swipe of
his well grown feet Snatching tho
old muzzle loading musket from tho
corner he roared out "Hear!" and van-
ished. Hours passed and the sun was low
when William returned tired and hun-
gry and 'vithout lcar meat Ho had
followed Ilruin so he said from thick-
et to thicket und through swamps and
over hills sometimes catching a
glimpse of black fur but never getting
a chance to shoot till at last he lost
him in a rock) gorge and was forced
by the approach of night to givo up and
return empty handed.
I sympathized feelingly as he sorrow-
fully stood the old gun in the corner.
Happening to pick it up I saw that tho
lock was missing. "Why how is this?
You havo no lock on the gun." Glanc-
ing up at the shelf I saw that the lock
was there wrapped in an oiled rag
where William himself had placed It
tho night before after cleaning the
gun. "Hello William! You forgot to
put your lock on beforo starting" I
shouted. The blue eyes opened wldo
in a perplexed stare and the under lip
dropped a bit farther down. Then the
little puckers deepened as tha eyes
closed somewhat
