There Is ono universal nmbition nmong
peoplo of every social grade and each
has its standards that represent this
nmbition. Each social grndo lias its
conception of what it Is to bo a lady or

have Its own Ideal of what is permissi-

Yorker nnd his wife went down to visit
n relative ono of these settlers who dc-

Now Yorker was very genial and com-
panionable nnd his wifo very affable.
Tho Tcxans who had their own stand-
ards of conventionality felt somewhat
uneasy lest theso did not rench tho
standards of tho peoplo who represent'

nities. Tho rich man was troubled
with dyspepsia nnd his wifo kept ft
close watch on him nt tho tabic Ice-

tho wifo protested to hlra under her

found ho could not bo convinced sho
said: "Well if you will liavo it do put

turned for direction and guidance

tho well trained waiter immediately

ABOUT SUICIDE.
A I'tiytlrlnii's lnnntlon of tlio Pccnllsrl
tie or Urir-Murder.
"Did you ever liotlco that ns a rule
the persons who socle death and nro res
cued from tho ffrnvo never court tho so-
ciety of tho dark nngel again."
'llio nronottndcr or tlio nucstion was a
hospital physician nnd ho proceeded to
explain without waiting for nn answer.
"Wlint I mean is that of nil persons
who attempt sulfide nnd aro foiled but
fiv try iielf murder n second time
l'robably ono-hnlf if not more of all
thoso who try to kill themselves aro
frustrated. Tho percentage of thoso
who leap Into tho dark river n second
timo Is exceedingly small. I havo tried
to discover tho ro-tson for this from tlio
lips of thoso who have iono through tho
tcrrlblo experience but I havo not met
with success.
It Is queer that ncrsons after de
voting weeks and months to a consider
ation of so momentous n question and
deciding lo end tholr existence should
when foilcd.declntv that they were fools
nnd swear never to do tho llko again.
ict this Is w hat is done in n largo majori-
ty of cases. Thoso who havo stared nt
death seem to llvo lifo anew. Tlio pastls
effaced a new- light seems to havo
dawned. Tho sunshine Is dearer; tho
nlr is purer. It Is tho convalescent tnk-
Ing great draughts of tho outdoor nlr
with a keenness of relish that was not
known before.
"Did you ever witness n hanging?
Tho execution Is impressive. It is ter-
rlblo to sco a human life deliberately
nnd coolly token lint this Is not tho
mast terrible thing about a hanging.
It is the recollection of Ik tho mental
picture of that death scene that Is
awful. So it is with tho suicide. It is
not so fearful to tnko a poisoned
draught to pull n trigger or tnko a
plunge. Hut to thoso who hnvo rushed
to death nnd havo failed to overtake it
tho recollection of that race must lto
awful nnd this Is what deters rash
mortals from a second r .tempt. This
is tho only explanation I can gather.
"What do I think of suicide? It is
moral cowardico and physical courage.
It takes ncrvo to throw ono's self in
front of a moving locomotive but a hu-
man being that cannot bear adversity
lacks tho higher courage. It is not so
that all persona who sock their own
lives nro insane.
"There is possibly ono caso lu which
moral cowardico is not apparent It is
in tho caso of tho pcrsou who is suffer-
ing torture from a fatal illness " Chi-
