A PET SPIDER.
R Had tots ot ran Tumbling Into a

Wo named him Italshazzaron lha occa-
sion of hta first visit to us. though 1
have forgotten trbat suggested the
name. He was a big black spider with
a ahlnjr fat body suggqstlra of an
abundance of files but for alt this ap-
preciation of the good things of life be
was of a scholarly turn of mind. We
were all tented around the stud table
preparing the next day's lessons and
tasks when Minnie garo a scream that
made me Jump and eren tho boys
looked up startled There wan a big
black spider calmly seated on a latin
dictionary regarding ua Intently. 1
flapped a paper at him but ho only
drew In his legs with a slightly con-
temptuous air and did not atlr.
"Let him alone sister" an Id Tom.
"I'tq been atudylng about spiders and
here Is a good opportunity for observ-
ing their habits."
As if encouraged by this champion-
ship Oelthatxar descended from the dic-
tionary and crawled slowly oyer the
open page of an algebra as If trying to
make out what It was. Prom this ho
went orar all the books Inspecting
them all with the same critical air and
at last nettUd on a physical geography
aa most worthy of his attention. Erery
now and then he would refresh blmsoli
with a drink out ot Aleck's Ink bottle.
All atones we misled htm and aa he
had last been seen drinking from the
idge ot tho bottle suspicion Immediately
arose that he had fallen In. Ilo had
and wna floundering helplessly about In
the black pooL Ilo was rescued nnd
placed In a scrap of waito paper with
Injunctions to remain there until dry
but this he had no Intention of doing.
On the contrary ho showed a fixed de-
termination to walk orer Tom's neatly
written Latin oxerclse. "You shan't

the feathered end of a quill pen on to
his scrap ot papen
And then for the next few ralnutea
wo forgot all about him till Turn's cry
of dismay called attention to hla oxer-
slss. It was lined and rellned and lined
again with Jlelshazxar'a tracks. Ha had
not left an Inch unmarked and wan
ven looking very complacent over his
nice black tracings when our exclama-
tions of sorrow and auger seemed to
arouse him to a sense of shame and ho
icrambled down the tabic aud wasgono
In the twinkling of an eyo.
We thought we had seen the last ot
him but the next night ho came ngaln
and again until we looked for him as a
regular visitor and placed the physical
jeography open for him for his fancy
for It seemed to last Tho nccldent of
his fall Into the Ink bottle was repented

that he was drowned but ho gradually
revived and beyond appearing rather
lubdued was little the worse for the

In the Ink after that first night nothing

he would run over that and seemed to

What became of our queer pet wo
never knew but one night he failed to
make his appearance and we were sur-
prised to find now much we missed
him. We hoped however thnt ho
would come the next erenlnir. but he
never did and somehow the study hour
after that seemed longer and duller
and not to be looked forward to. Phil-

HUNTING THE HARE.
rhe Delights or Going Hi Hound or the
3 Traps od a Frostr Uornluf.
The.-e do not aeem to be as many
hares now as there used to bo when I
was a 1k. Then tho "old fields" and
branch-bottoms used to be full of them.
They wero peculiarly our game; I mean
we used to consider that they belonged
to us boys. They were rather scorned
by the "gentlemen" by which was
meant tho grown-up gentlemen who
hot partridges over the pointers and
snly picked up a hare when she got In
their way; and the negroes used to cttch
them In traps or "gums" which were
traps made of hollow gum-tree logs; but
wo boys wero tho hare-hunters. They
wero our property from our childhood:
Ljust as much wa considered as "Ilruno"
and "Don" tho beautiful "crack"
pointers with their brown eyes and sat-
iny ears nnd coats were tho "gentle-
men's." The negroes used" to set traps all hc
fall and winter and we with the nat-
ural tendency of boys to Imitate what-
ever Is wild and primitive used to set
traps also. To tell the truth however
the hares appeared to have a way of
going Into the negroea' traps rather
than Into ours and the former caught
many to our one.
Even now after many years. I can
remember tho delight of the frosty
mornings; the joy with which we used
to peep through tho little Danes of tho
dormer-windows at the white frost over
the fields which promised stronger
chances of game being caught; tho
eagerness with which oblivious of tho
cold wo sped through tho garden
across ths field along the ditch banks
and up by the woods making the
round of our traps; the expectancy
with which we peeped orer the whitened
weeds and through the bushes to catch
a glimpse of the gums In some "part"
or at some clearly marked "gap;" our
disappointment when we found the
door standing open and the trigger set
lust aa we had left It the morning be-
fore; our keen delight when the door
waa down; tho dash for the trap; the
scuCle to decide which should look In
first: the peep at the brown ball screwed
up back at tho far end; the delicate
operation of getting the bare out of the
trap; and the triumphant return home
holding up our spoil to be seen from
alar. We wero happier than we knew
