such serious and influential French jour-
nals as Li Monlteu'r des Interests Mate-

Agrlcols may be recognized tbe out-
ward manifestations ot this new faith and
purpose.
Sixteen years' experience of monometal-
ism baa entailed an induttrlal and agri-
cultural situation In Western Europe
which demands a remedy. How much of
tbe present depression In these Interest
has been really due to the practical de-
monetization ot sliver is a question npon
which there Is naturally a wld. diverg-
ence of opinion but the belief that the af-
fect of the policy has been vitally preju-
dicial It rapidly growing. Lord Dufferln
states that the low and fluctuating value i
ot silver Is disastrous to tbe treasury of
inula ana declares himself In favor of tbe
Immediate monetlzatlon while Mr. Bamuel
Bmlth a-well known English economist
even goes so far as to attribute to demon-
etization and its economio conssquances a
large influence In th. agrarian troublea of
Ireland the discceitent ot that country
the protectionist reaction ot continental
Europe and the spread of Socialism and
disorders incident to poverty and en-
forced Idleness.
In view ot ah that one rends and hears
In the discussion ot this question It would
seem appareut that tbe monetary confer-
ence which Is to assemble at Paris In Sep-
tember will meat under circumstances far
more promising to tba Interests ot bl-
melallsm than those which surrounded
the conference ot 1831.

BRUTAL CRIME.
A Drunken Unite Nlionls Ilia Wife nnd Her
Mother at III Dorado ICeu.
Eldorado Kan. Aug 12. O I. of the
most brutal crimes which has everstalned
the records of this section was perpetrated
here early yesterday morning and Its
origin is directly traceable to the non-enforcement
ot tbe Prohlb tory law in this
clty.the probable murderer beluga Joint 1st
nnd under the influence ot liquor at tho
time lie attempted to kill two unprotected
women.
About one o'clock yesterday morning
Robert Knydor whose wife bad left him
because of his maltreatment ol ter went
to the bouso of bis motliar-ln-law in a
dangerous state of intoxication and de-
manded admission. Thla being refused ha
broke th door open and entered revolver
In hand.
The two women were found by the In-
furiated brute crocch.l In a corner of
their bedroom. An instant later a sharp
report rang ont and Mrs. Snyder glvinga
piercing scream fell to tbe floor with a
bullet through tbe right breast probably
fatally wounded.
The fiend then tumrd upon tbe mother
ot his wife and standing at close quarters
fired full upon her. The bullet struck tha
poor did woman In th. abdomen and
ranged directly through the body. There
Is not one chance In a thousand that she
can recover.
Snyder attempted to escape as soon aa
he saw the terrible effect of bis two shots
but the firing had attracted tho attention
of officers and neighbors and be was cap-
tured and locked up. He did not express
the least contrition tor his terrible crime

A Very Favorable Crop In Minnesota anil
Daklita.
Minneapolis Minn. Ang. 1L "Tbo
wheat crop in Minnesota and the Dakota
will reach 83000000 bushels and I think
will go to 90000 000 bishels"was the cheer-
ing announcement of Colonel Rodger
editor of the Market Record yesterday
1 It will be tbe bet crop harvested
In klx years." said Manager A. B. Rob-
bins of the Northwestern Elevator Com-
pany. There is confidence on every hand
and tbe above are the sentiments of grain
men generally. Two weeks ago a few
mad predictions ot 80000000 butbeii and
a majority said tbe claim waa too high.
Now an increase ot 6000000 above that
figure Is not regarded as unreasonable.
Tba samples of wheat slown by the vari-
ous '.levator lines frcm bou.es wldily
apart showan almost uniform excellence.
Tbe kernel Is bright aud plump in striking
contrast to that ot last year wblcb bad a
dull appearance with a shrinking kernel
In some cases almost entirely without fill-
ing. There bave been only about a dozen
cars ot new wbeat received here thus far
and H is sold at au advance of aloul 4
cent over offerings to arrive 83 cinta
being tbe top figure. On on point grain
men aro unanimous. It no accideut hap-
pens to the crop In Dakota or Minnesota
in the uext ten day there will be plied up
In the granaries a magnificent crop of
wheat the quality of which has seldom It
ever been equaled the weight being sixty
pounds to the Lutbsl. It Is expected that
with no storms tbe crop In Minnesota will
b barvetted in ten days and la the Da-
kota in fifteen days.
