Bcnnlc coininltlco designated to
invoHtignto the appointment of
Indian traders nro now nt Arkan-
sas City ongngod in that work.
Woui.n it not bo much hotter if
the strip lcBsees would not mcddlu
with tlio political affairs ot our
country? Thoy may not ho nor
havoany intention to do so hut
tlicro is a rumor to that affect.
Tlicy arc accused of having mndo
up n largo campaign fund to aid
tlio National parly in tho lust gen-
eral election. Bettor keep out.
It only takes a petition from tho
peoplo to annul your loaso.
Now is tho accopted timo for tho
professional liar to oxorciso his
hell-born gift In slandering his
neighbor under tho guiso of polit-
ical privileges. For all liars
from him who takes care to sugar-
coat his falsehoods with just
enough truth to cntiso them to be
swallowed by tho squeamish with-
out nauseating offects to him whoso
long practice in the profoBgion eft-
titles him to tho distinction of be-
ing tho boss of liars and whose
oath is worth as much as his word.
Connected with tlio fact that one
is or was incumbent of boiiio high
office but who failed to discharge
his duties hororably and to main-
tain its dignity such a reputation
is a plaguo spot upon tho history
of our nation. But liars arc neces-
sary in tho eternal fitness of things
to givo namo to their opposites
tho truthful and to establish tho
fact that there is a devil.
AN UNEVEN CONTEST.
That the party in power has tho ad-
vantage in tho coming election no
ono who knows how thatpowor has
been used and abused to strength-
en tho party can fail to compro
hend. It has been in power for
nearly eight years gradually gath-
ering to itself tho elements that
givo it character and by which it
must retain power if at all. Tho
pci plo know what is tho. reputa-
tion of tho present administration
and in accord with that reputation
tney may expect the kind of
means that will be used to keep it
in power. Tho means let it bo
what it may fair honorablo or
not must excrciso an iniluenco to
tho disadvantage of tho opposing
party. Eight years of power and
opportunity to possess itsolf of
tho means for campaign purpose
wholhor acquirod at homo or
nbroad upon a promiso to do cer-
tain things is an advantago the
party in power has. That major-
ity that at first put it in powor
enters into advantages likewise
but aa tho progressive elcmont of
tho nation cannot bo bound by tho
flimsy ties of parties which havo no
real political differences that ma-
jority ib easy overcome. What
tho progressive peoplo of tho coun-
try want is ability honesty and
an equal (vdministration of our uf-
fairs in which every citizen will
find opportunity and inducement
for a full and freo enjoyment of
industry and enterprise. Thoso
who favor a rolapso into conditions
of a century ago and who sco in
tho progress of incoming genera-
tions their displacement in tho af-
fairs of government aro necessari-
ly alurmod and as a protection to
thomselves and their kind will
"down breaks" it thoy can.
How much power to cripple in-
dustry and ontorpriso among those
whoso energies demand a field for
thoir excrciso is possiblo in tho
hands of a "pull-back" anyone
who will tako tho pains to inform
himself can discover in tho pre-
rogatives of tho chiof oxecutivo
influenced by projudice and a natu-
ral hatred for cortain classes of our
people.
Tho Chieftain's purposo is to
rear no distinctions as to political
prviloges or to draw a lino any
whore except whoro qualification
and a fooling of natural broth or-
hood dotormino a profuronoo in
thoir favor. It cannot bo accounted
to bo unpatriotic by roason of sucli
profcrenco bocauso it is only in
tho capacity of thoso who handle
tho reins of govornment and in tlio
ndvaucomout of oursclvos and chil-
dren our nation can bo saved.
COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS.
Tho Chiora Somlnary Rooom-
mendatlona In tho Hondo of a
Joint Commlttoo.
Taliltqaah Mouday Kveulug April tth.
This morning tho council as pro-
claimed convenod in extra session.
Members about all present oxcopt
tho mombor-uloct from Sequoyah.
Tho chiefs mossage Belting iorth
tho purposes of the call was road
lu English . Tho necessity for tho
convening tho counojl in extra sos.
dion acoins to havo boon determin-
ed by tlio executive council.
They flto u kind of a modern tri-
umvir who doldo gravo questions
of tato and shoulder rcepon-l
itl!jtk3.
In the (lftornnon lh( tnc
was read in Cherokee. Homo
tlii-
cuss'ton followed and contrary to
tho old saying that thoro is wis-
dom'in tlio multiplicity of couiwl
the truthfulness of whieh win not
apparent just at that lime the
mosaogo was relorrod to a joint
coinmtlteo of soven thrco from
tho sonato and four from tho coun-
cil consisting of from tho sonato :
Itogors of Illinois ;
Mayes of Coowcoecoowoo ;
Gritts ol Going Snako.
From tho counoil:
Daniels of Coowooscoowoo ;
Jo's. Thompson of Dolawaro ;
Loury of Canadian ;
Hendricks of Tahloquah.
From indications gathered since
morning it will not bo easy for
tho council to ngrco. It is said
that somo of tho districts aro de-
cidedly opposod to the rebuilding
of tho seminary. Anothor cause
for disagreement will be (whether
serious or not it cannot yet bo de-
termined) a contest among tho
members as to tho placo where it
shall bo built.
There '.seems to bn no dofiuito
idoa in or out of council ac to what
kind of a building they propose to
erect ; whothor aftor the style of
tho old or something new ; wheth-
er in the same place using tho old
foundation and such other materi-
al as can be used or at some other
placo near or in Tahloquah or
olsowlicro. As suggested by tlio
Chieftain of last week so all
can havo an oqual chanco for edu-
cating their children at an acade-
my an idoa of a co-oducntionnl
instilulson sooms not to be 'enter-
tained. Such an institution built
in town where the peoplo can
board thoir own and children of
others would silence tho presont
opposition to rebuilding. All then
would bo on a level as to privileg-
es tho only difference being that
which no law can create but that
difference that industry manage -mout
and economy may make in
tlio ability of persons to send their
children to such an institution.
THE PLATFORMS.
Anolhor Lottor on Thoir Compar-
ative Worth.
Tho fifth section of tho platform
of tho National party pledges itsolf
against all species of corruption in
tho details of tho government of
thoir nation and inculcates nuru
and patriotic motives in legielativo
conduct. It nlso opposes tho fill-
ing of any office in which a mem.
bor of tho sonato or council may
have a personal and pecuniary in-
terest ; and the section following
pledgoe itsolf that all lawful con-
tracts and obligations ot the nation
shall bo upheld. If thoro was any
occasion or even if circumstances
domanded there would be a
reasonable excuse and pardon for
sections five and six of this plat-
form. Wo do not think nor does
it seem supposable for a moment
that the late councilors think there
is n necessity lor the incorporation
into this platform provisions pro-
hibiting the monstrous vices men-
tioned. In tho "palmiest" days
of tlio National party alio never
ncodedthe provision of a platform
to extend around it tho protection
of such a provision to save it from
the greed and avarice that actuates
many political parties. If.n sena-
tor or councilor becomes so corrupt
as to not let a spirit of patriotism
bo tho incentive to honest louisla-
tion and has strayed so far from a
mother's toachingas to fill an office
in which ho may dorivo a personal
or pecuniary benefit he is not fit-
tod to be a legislator and tho sooner
removed and "ousted" tho better
for himself party and country.
So far as tho nation being faithful
to its contracts and obligation i
concernod it is only necessary to
say that in our opinion and so far
as wo know she has always faith-
fully fulfilled them and many times
at considerable expense to herself
as she is now doing everj" day.
But it may be the twuty means to
sco that elio honestly fulfills these
obligations if tho National party
be successful in tho coining elec-
tion. 'It ought never to have made
montion of tlicso faeU in iU phtt-
lonn as tho party needs no aasur-
anco of that fact much less the
peoplo at large who are going to
chooso for thomselvos in the com-
ing election whom to vole for.
Tho fifth section of the Downing
platform acknowledges tho irroat
object of keeping peace and friend-
ship among on own citizens claim
ing tins govornment and her insti-
tutions must be preserved by a
united oflbrt of the peoplo. It also
guarantees oqu-1 justice to all citi-
zens and every right guaranteed
them under the laws constitution
and treaties and specifically men-
tions tho Shawnoes Chorokeoa by
blood Delawaros Froodmen
Crooks and adopted citizens. It
will Btrivo to mnko every citizen
feel this is his home and that hero
his life liberty and proporly aie
protected. In this thoro is no room
tor misconstruction misinterpreta-
tion or misundorstnnding of thoir
righlB. Thoro novor should have
boon in tho first placo but nil peo-
plo can't see alike when they don't
want to. And whon thoy say they
could not understand it they could
not understand simple English
then for of all simplo things that
certainly was tho uimplest of nil.
But tho inentionod classes who
havo boon dopriovod oftholr rights
now havo t opportunity to thor-
oughly try a party on its own prop-
ositionand boo if it will not per-
form what It agrees to and then if
it fails so to do thoy havo a just
reason and causo to support any
other party that will givo thow all
tho right guaranteed them in
treaty constitution and law Ho it
only takes a mere glanco r j e o
that there is Jtisldoral c d.tf r r r
