KoitoiiCillKrrAtx I arrived at this place
yesterday (Saturday) evening and found the
Inhabitants greatly excttod over a moat atro-
cious double murder committed In tire neigh-
borhood tha night beforo Abont mile north
of hers a white family consisting of a Mrs.
Kerr and her son the latter about twenty-one
yearaof age occupied a house of humble preten-
sions. On Saturday morning about 9 o'clock
a neighbor went to the house to sea Mrs. Kerr
and falling to arouse attention by knocking
stepped to the window a pane of which was
broken and pnahlng to one aldo the curtslr
he beheld a most ghastly sight the mother
lying on her bed In an Insensible state
but stilt breathing and tbe aon on a pallet
near tha foot of hla mother's bed horribly
mangled and dead. Farther Inrestlgatlon
showed that the assassin had ontered the
bouse at the back door and had nsed the axe
owned by the murdered people as an Instru-
ment of destruction. Mrs. Kerr waa struck a
heary blow with tbe poll of the axe about the
forehead crushing her skull. Her son was
struck twice on tbo head In the aame way and
seems to hare been Instantly killed. Vo Indi-
cations of reslstenceor of even a struggle In
either ease were vlsable Mrs Kerr breathed
but a short time after ahe was first found.
A Doctor I'lle and family also white people
lire some three miles from tha scenes just
described. About one o'clock of the samo
night some one cntored bis house and com-
menced a most violent attack upon the person
of the doctor. Tho weapon nserseems to have
been a sharp edged board picked up In tbe
yard. The doctor waa terribly mangled and
his life was for a time despaired of but later
adrlceti pronounce hla recovery probable.
Mra. I'lle was aroused by the noise and rais-
ing npln bed was also struck on the head.
An adjoining room waa occupied by a hired
man. He was aroused or rather atusned by
heavy blowa over tbe head and body with the
aame board A boy sleeping with him shout-
ed "Get your pistol and shoot him "This
seemed to have tbe effect to frighten the wonld-
be assassin away but on Isavlng tbe room be
passed around to a window which was up and
looked In It Is supposed to see the result of
bis assault. Only one person was seen but
his features or even bis color could not be rec-
ognised. The same person Is supposed to have
committed all of tbe brutal deeds.
Mrs. Kerr Is supposed not to bare bad any
money and nothing of value It la said was
taken from her honse nor was there any at-
tempt at robbery In theothercase Suspicion
rests upon a colored man of tho neighborhood
who It lsaald had a grudge against both fsm-
lles but thla only appears to be a matter of
speculation. J K OixrniLL.
