Do not complain if this issue is
a trlllo cooler than last. We'must
give tho old man n breathing spell
you know.
Wr. have perfected arrange-
ments for furnishing our readers
with a fall nnd intelligent Weekly
report of what council is doing.
The Arkansas City Traveler
and tho Advocate seem to be
"sawing off " with each other on
reprinting Bushyhcad news from
tho Qlobc-Dcmocrat's telegraphic
columns.
The Arkansas City Democrat
prints n snako story vory much
resembling tho ono told by Mr.
llonch of Locust hill which wo
gave two or thrco weeks ngo. Wo
fear tho Democrat's editor has
been reading tho Chieftain with
too much profit.
W. A. PuiLLirs on bekilf of
Chief Bushyhcad has notified tho
government as to tho stand which
'will bo taken by tho latter in rela-
tion to tho Chcrokco strip. It is
to bo hoped that this will bo about
his last appearance at tho depart-
ments as a representative of the
executive of this nation. If Mr.
Bushyhcad or tho cattlemen desire
tho further services of this wart
they should pay for those services
from their private means. Ho has
probably been cunning enough to
gather facts damaging to his clique
hut not tho nation. Without
doubt this charmed circlo has fre-
quently criminated itself but the
people nro not accountable.
THAT TREASURY STATEMENT.
That forthcoming statement
which Mr. Bushyhcad is going to
bring from Washington wo shall
look for with great interest.
The editor of tho Advocato says it
will show that wo don't owe the
government "a binglo dollar."
No one of any senso claims that
wo owo tho government a "single
dollar" or any other kind of a
dollar. That is not tho point of
complaint against Mr. Phillips and
his crowd. Tho gist of tho griev-
onco is this: That theso fellows
should allow tho record at Wash
fngton to become so shaped as to
show (falBely it may bo) abalancc
against our nation. Wo believe
tho government is too honor-
able to claim tho advantage;
and the statomeu which Mr.
Bushyhcad will bring- from
Washington will contain no
asserted claim against our nation.
But ono thing is certain; it will
show no change for the better in
tho record. Tho evil work of Mr.
Phillips as stamped upon the
record cannot bo purged. Tho
statute tho appropriation net
places tho 8300000 upon all
our lands west of tho Arkansas
river. If Mr. Bushyhead can
bring a statement from Washing-
ton which will show that this is
not tho case wo would bo very
glad to sec it; for it will do more
than anything else to vindicate tho
management of our national affairs
against the suspicions of cither
ignorance or corruption.
THE PRESIDENT'S VIEWS.
General Grant was looked upon
as tho great friend of the Indian
Tiut thero arc many things to in-
dicate that President Clovcland
will gain even moro popularity in
that direction. All that tho civil
ized' tribes desire at tho hands of
tho government is an equitable
observance of existing treaties and
in a great degree th western In-
dians are in ho same position.
When supplies are promised at
cortain times thoy want them
promptly at that time. Tho do-
lays of the Indian department anW
beyond their understanding- and
naturally they have no disposition
to fatho n tho same. That Presi-
dent Cleveland is allvo to this
characteristic is indicated by the
following Washington special to
mo uiouc-Mumocrai:
It is expected that in his forth
coming message tho president will
give somo attention to proposed
changes in tho machinery of the
Indian bureau. It is stated that
ho looks upon tho prompt and
honest distribution of supplies to
the Indians as the most important
clement in tho problem and ro-
garde the present system as radi-
cally dofectivq. The solution that
he favors involves tho abolition of
h great part of tho machinery of
tho Indian bureau. Ho is said to
boliuvo that tho commissary of-
ficers of tho army could buy for
both departments with economic
advantage. Tho distribution too
could bo made through tho same
HiRnnnls and with moro certainty
to promptness. This lettor

"WHAT IB THAT TO BE?"
Kihtoiis op Indian ChiektaiN!
Heard a sermon on tlio subject last
Sunday. Tins rainy afternoon 1
tako opportunity to write a letter
to your many readers something
for thorn to think about. Thrown
upon the rocks of a pitiless world
friendless amid tho civilized ami
christianized people (so called)
this-day brings with ' an aching
sense of loneliness and desolation
which comes down upon my spirit
liko darkness upon tho earth. How
different my experience may
bo from yours 1 Kach possesses
their own peculiar history so liko
in many respects and bo radically
different in others. Life is at best
a tangled skein and tho moro wo
try to unravel it tho moro knotty
docs it become. Somo speak ol
joy and gladness and the leaf looks
bright and cheerful; others tell us
of heartaches trials; thero are
dark pages which make Bick tho
heart and cause tho reader to
ask what after this. Others which
speak of lives and scenes that sat-
isfy tho better part of our nature;
those which tell us of love of
patience unselfish affection; that
speak of a mother's care and con
fidence of a father's selfdcnial and
hope of a sister's aid and comfort
of a brother's manly acts arc ever
dear to our memories. You may
think it impertinent on tho part of
one so unworthy as I to offer words
of advice and greeting and on
general principles your words
would prove- highly applicable.
What I have to say is not gleaned
from my own exporienco only but
was told mo by others when cast
down and ncoding sympathy I My
friend did you ever do a kind act
to anyone in timo of iipcd ? Did
you ever speak kind words to any-
one when in distress and felt a
senso of pleasure in your heart
knowing that you were doing a
duty to a fellow creature ? I have
many a time. May tho days that
await us find our hearts and minds
still attuned to some holy song of
love. Howovcr I know no friend
cares to face the world when it is
himstlf alono that stands between
his friend and disgrace. Let come
what will I am ready to do my
part and present a rcspcctablo
truth to tho light. In sunshine or
storm during sickness or health
plenty or famino. I shall ever per-
form my duties with truthfulness
and sincerity. I will willingly
closo jny eyes and turn my face
against tho scorncr but spare mo
the painful labor of hiding deceit
or misery from the great trouble-
some world. Evil associations and
uncharitable words will I gladly
keep back but do not compel mo
to withhold from the people that
unhappiness which often dwells in
the hearts of many. Let charity
patience and fidelity be vour ob
ject and hopo in life and I will
not be compelled to hide my head
in shame nor-blush at the sights 3
behold or the words I hear.
Though it be but a trifle oven a
flower by tho wayside if it has
beauty and fragrance pluck it and
hand it to your fellow traveler for
if you wait to do great things for
him ho may have fallen from your
sido and disappeared forever before
you have done aught to gladden his
heart. Hichaiid H. Fields.

It is said that the laying of tho
corner stono of tho court house at

something most disgraceful that did
not occur In tho Indian Territory: "It

lather who was formerly a resident of
Oofloyvillc. This horrible brute it Is
stated wns nt one tlmo arrested and
tried for beating his (laughter tlto
purpose ol tho punishment being to
compel her to submit to his desires.
While every human heart must feel an
emotion oi; pity for the poor girl thus
forced to become- an outcast the acts
of tho father go a long way towards
reconciling us to tho doctrlno of end-
less punishment. No penalty that
could bo Inflicted in time would bo
adequate for such enormity of guilt."
MuKDr.it at Canf.y. An Independ-
ence paper publishes the following
account of a murder which occurred on
Monday night of Inst week: "Tho mur-
dered man seems to bo Identified by
letters and a discharge from tho regu-

onn Martin Williams. Tho letters
were addressed to him at Osage Agency
from some Indian mission in New
York. Ho is ahalr breed Indian. Tho
murderer William Welch is a three-
fourths blood Cherokee who has resid-
ed in the vicinity of Caney for a num-
ber of years and was known to bo ugly
and 'dangerous when drinking. Wil-
liams rodo Into Caney about 8 o'clock
Monday evening put up his pony and
went to Judy's restaurant where ho
fell in with Welch. Tho two seemed
to be soclablo with each other and
doubtless found some liquor and drank
freely. Tho constable states that
Welch loft tho restaurant abont ten
o'clock firing off his revolver a tlmo or
two and crossed the street and shortly
afterwards ho was followed by Wil-
liams. Moro shots were heard but no
attention was paid to them. The next
morning tho body of Williams was
found on tho opposite sido of tho
street from tho restaurant. Ho had on
his person when found about $30 in
money but no weapons except a rr.xor
which was in a case in his pocket. Far-
ties at once went In search of Welch

mile south of the state line and brought
him back to Caney. A preliminary ex-
amination was held before .Esquire
White at Caney at which Welch
pleaded guilty and he was brought to
