provldod with scissors and when news
Is scarce they can bo used to advantage.

camoalong ways from being success-
ful. Owing to a strike tho cars wero
not running but part way and beforo
half the dlstauco bad been travolod it
was necessary to turn back in order to
catch tho train. Tho car following tho
ono on which thoy went out was sur-
rounded at a street corner by a mob of
rioters who in ado an assault upon tho
driver and conductor. Tho police used
their clubs but wero about to bo over-
powered when ono of them drow his
revolver and shot a man doad. This
had tho effect to demoralize tho mob
and when our friends on their return

Tnc Best way. An exchange dis-
cusses tbo various ways of advertlalng.
Some raon merely put a sign over the
the doors. This is advertising. It Is
to let the public know who docs busi-
ness in that house; somo hangout their
wares In front; somo mako a display in
show windows; somo scatter dodgers
some tack up cards or post bills and all
theso ways havo their uses. Bnt the
best of all ways Is to advcrtlsoln tbe
columns of tho country newspaper.
In that way a man hangs up his sign
beforo people'seyes whenever the paper
Is read. He goes into their homes
offices stores and workshops and tells
them who he is whore his placo oi bus-
iness is what bo is ongagod in what
bargains ho can give what attractions
ho has and what inducements he can
offer. Money spent In this way is
money that Is scattered and yet
increases.
Iowa Mct ual Aid. We havo received
letter from J. D. Ferrec secretary of
ho so-called Iowa Mutual Aid assocla-
Ion demanding a retraction of what
our correspondent said somo weeks ago
of that concern. Mr. Fcrreo is cither
very Ignorant or ho Is trying to "get
away with bluff" as tho boys say. We
hardly think in bis caso it is ignorance
He doubtless scut his agents into this
territory very well knowing that they
could perpetrato almost any fraud so
they did not transgress tho United
States statutes. Ho was not a citizen
of this nation and thoro was no means
of reaching blm or his association.
Docs Mr. Fcrreo suppoae for a moment
that this samo absence of law docs
not operate both ways? Why'bless you
Mr. Ferree about all wo can do In this
country is to kick after wo are
swindled. In relation to tho Rogers
case wo havo this much to say: If
that the first death of tho association
In tho territory had been of an influ-
ential and widely-known citizen In-
stead of a poor colored woman we
bcllevo tho policy would havo been
paid. Heretofore the Chieftain has
had nothing to say of tho Iowa Mutual
Aid association. Wo am frco to say wo
beliovc it Is a good institution to keep
out of. To Mr. Fcrreo in person the
writer stated months ago that he had
no faith in an association which for tho
benefit of tho poople only proposed to
do certain things for their good. That
view has not been chan ged.

Nelms-Wicst Cattle Thoubls. Last
Monday afternoon considerable Inspir-
ation was Infused ;nto matters around
town by tbe detention of four cars of
stock In trsnslt. The particulars as
picked up on alt sides aro about as fol-
lows: Two years ago W. T. Webb trom
Cbelopa wo believe came down here
and went to work on a place belonging
to W. U. Nclms. Two hundred and
fifty head of cattlo wero purchased and
it is what isleftof tbatbunch together
with somo hogs that aro now In dis-
pute. For some time the parties have
been endeavoring to effect a settlement
without success. Last Monday Webb
with tho aid of bis son gathered np
what cattle could be found loaded them
Into four cars with twenty-five or fifty
hogs and shipped them atAdair forCho-
topa as tbo property of A. U. Stronde.
When they reached hero Nolraa was In
waiting and insisted that the cattlo
were being stolen from him and must
beheld. Tbe train was detained for a
time until the United States agent
could be heard from. His instructions
by telegraph were that Tom Knight
Indian policeman should take chargo
of tho stock and hold It until an In-
vestigation could bo had. All parties re-
paired toMuakogee and ufl ttj last night
bad not returned. The four cars were
switched out near the Missouri Pacific
yards and a guard has been watch
Ing over them ever since. No ono
thought It expedient to break tbe seals
and so tho stock has been kept in the
cars ever sinco first loaded. A north
bound train crow were ordered to pick
up theso cars Tuesday evening bnt tbe
officer in chargo refused to let them go
unless tho cattlo wero unloaded. There
wero about ono hundred and twenty
head and with tbo hogs were probably
worth fourteen or fifteen hundred
dollars. By tho titno the matter of
ownership is settled they are nottikety
to bave increased any in value. Latib.
Tho cattlo wero unloaded Wednesday
niuht and tbo parties havo returned
from Muskogco. Agont Owen has not
yet delivered an opinion but from what
thoso who heard the evidence say tho
opinion will probably bo advese to Mr
Webb.
