Steele Bound Over. I
In the preliminary hearing be-
fore Justice Heathcock last Mon-
day W. R. Steele charged with
shooting Wadie Bardin on Wed-
nesday of last week was bound
over in the sum of $500 to await
the action of the district court.
The prosecution was conducted
by Asst. County Attorney Hig-
gins of McAlester and Attorney
Buell of this city while Fuller &
Porter looked after the defence.
.Young Bardin was considera-
bly " rattled" during the exami-
nation and at one time broke com-
pletely down.
He stated that he procured his
license on Monday when they
showed to be dated Tuesday.
He also stated that the shooting
took place on Tuesday when in
fact it was on Wednesday morn-
ing. The girl stated she had never
promised to marry Bardin and
that she never intended to.
Steele promptly made bond.
To the Voters of McAlester:
Realizing that you have the
ricrht to be informed as to the
j gas franchise to be voted upon
I Saturday June 21st and desiring
1 that every opportunity should be
given for understanding its pro
visions and why it is desired
company had a large number of
I copies printed and distributed.
(These copies also contain a let
ter giving reason lor desiring
franchise an invitation to call at
company office for any further
information and explanations of
important sections of franchise.
As some may not have received
a copy company makes this fur-
ther effort to inform voters.
The tras company got in debt
because of having to re-lay pipes
under pavements. The new pipe
is of galvanized iron tested 50
pounds presure with leaded serew
body who furnishes it to city
limits and continue its use so
long as furnished and must pay
anyone who brings it to city lim-
its the price customarily paid
throughout state see see's. 11 &
12.
The company pays city nothing
under its present franchise.
Under this new franchise com-
pany must pay one per cent of
gross receipts which will amount
to many thousand dollars see
Sec. 13.
Sec. 10 provides that com
pany must extend main pipe line
to North McAlester and have it
finished within six months. Un-
der this section company must
spend a lot of money for labor
and prefers to spend it for white
home labor. Sec. 16 provides
that if company fails to comply
with any provision of franchise
it forfeits it. Would any com-
pany go to expense of getting a
franchise expecting to forfeit it
in six months?
j This provision for extension to
north McAlester is a most impor
tant one. There was never a time
A Splendid Showing.
We venture the assertion that
no pupil ever returned home
from their first year's work in
college with more honors than did
Miss Annie McGinnis daughter
of-Mr. and Mrs. Jas. McGinnis of
this city.
At the closing of the College
and Academy of the Incarnate
Word at San Antonio Tex. Miss
Annie was the recipient of four
diplomas and a handsome gold
medal. The diplomas were
awarded her for deportment
promotion music and shorthand
and the gold medal for Church
history.
Such records are of rare occur-
ence and we rejoice with her par-
ents and many friends for this
splendid showing.

I twenty year bonds. As the com-
pany's present franchise has
only sixteen more years to run
there is no way to issue twenty
year bonds but to extend the
(present franchise or procure a
I new one. Section 1 of artcle 10
j of our new city charter prohibits
the extension of the life of pny
franchise in existence at time of
adoption of charter until vwithin
two years of its expiration.
Because of this the present
company would have to wait 14
years before it could apply for a
renewal There is nothing left
then for the present company to
do but to worry along for four
teen years hampered and annoy-
ed for lack of sufficient funds to
pay debts and keep up with in-
creased demands for extended
service and better equipment or
to re-organize by means of a new
franchise. This then is a frank
statement of the purpose of the
franchise which you are asked to
grant by voting for it at the elec-
tion to be held Saturday June
21st 1913.
Company referes here to a few
of main provisions of franchise
viz:
The franchise is not exclusive.
The state law prohibits any city
from granting an exclusive fran-
chise. The city charter forbids
it. See sec. 3 Art. 10. Also fran-
chise says it not to be exclusive.
See sec. 4. Anybody that. wants
to can secure a franchise at any
time.
If we ever get natural gas
company must quit artificial gas.
and take natural gas from any-
work was so badly needed for
the laboring man. And yet some
people would have the laboring
man vote againt franchise and
I thereby deprive himself of the
to provide
meat and bread for his family.
Be sure that the man who tries
to get you to vote meat and bread
out of the mouths of your family
can show why he is against it.
Get the copy of the franchise and
see for yourself if he has stated
the truth about it.
In conclusion show that you
are for a bigger and better Mc-
Alester by turning a deaf ear to
the "Knocker" and voting for
the franchise.
Respectfully
Adv. W. G. WEIMER.

The five Homer brothers will
leave Friday night for Dewar
Okla. where they will meet five
members of that club in a cham-
pionship shoot Saturday.
The interurban handled the
large crowds going to McAlester
Tuesday in splendid style and not
a single accident was reported.
A beautiful spectacle was wit-
nessed in St. Joseph's church on
Wednesday morning last at ten
o'clock when on the artfully
decorated frie-dieu (alter) sym-
bolic of the virtue and purity of
the lives of this prominent young
couple Mr. Sylvester J. Doyle of
this city and Miss Lillie Malloy of
Alderson before a vast assem-
bly of admirinc: friends bl ssed
by one of the grandest ceremo-
neies in the Catholic Church
(Nuptial High Mass) plighted
their vows for life.
Promptly at 10 o'clock the
beautiful Mendelsohon wedding
march was commenced with Miss
Gladys Malloy sister of the
bribe presiding at the piano
the bridal party entered with
the bride holding the arm of her
father followed by the brides-
maids Miss Nellie Denehy of
McAlester and Mrs. John Guess
of Alderson and Miss Alice Mc-
Guire as the sweet little flower
"girl followed by the groom and
his best man Benj. F. Barry.
Rev. G. Guillaume taking ad-
vantage of the occasion briefly
explained the marriage ceremony
on which he made many touch-
ing remarks as regards the sa-
credness of the perpetual bond
which no human power can put
asunder.
He congratulated the happy
couple on their choice selection
by inviting the Lord Himself
veiled under the sacramental
species as the first guest to their
nuptial banquet before taking
their honeymoon trip to the far
west.
After the ceremony and con-
gratulations the bridal party
were driven to the home of the
bride's parents in Alderson to
partake of an elegant spread
and view their many presents
sent in by admiring friends.
This was said to have been
one of the prettiest church wed-
dings ever held in this part of
the country and was witnessed
by friends from almost every
town between McAlester and
Hartshorne.
They departed Wednesday af-
ternoon for a month's stay in
Colorado after which they will
be at home in Krebs.
This paper joins their many
friends in wishing them a happy
prosperous wedded life.
